Kim Charles Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Henderson Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc. - Springfield on Feb. 27, 2026.
In Loving memory of Kim Michael Charles

Kim Michael Charles was born on August 16, 1956, in Springfield, Massachusetts. He was the beloved son of Irene and James Charles Sr., who raised sixteen children together during their lifelong marriage, instilling in their family the values of faith, service, and community.

Kim was predeceased by six of his siblings: Lucy Jones, Geraldine Grimes, Rachel Green, Elaine Goodwin, Peggy Charles, and Stephen Charles Sr. He is survived by nine siblings: Willie Barker (Eleanor), Mary Perry, Patricia Emanuel (Archie), James Charles Jr., Beverly Charles-Yearwood (Elroy), Christopher Charles, Gloria Smith, Keith Charles (Melody), and Mark Charles.

Kim attended Springfield Public Schools for his primary and secondary education. He then served honorably in the United States Army as a medic, completing tours of duty in Korea, Germany, and Panama. His military service reflected his commitment to caring for others and answering the call to serve. In keeping with his faith and calling, Kim was an ordained Reverend who faithfully delivered sermons and officiated throughout the Springfield and Worcester communities. He was also a Mason.

Kim was the proud father of three children: Nakeesha Lavonne Sall (Sidy), Casey Charles (Latisha), and Michael Charles, whom he shared with his former wife, Desiree Parker. He was a devoted grandfather to four grandsons: Jamil Charles, Amir Charles, Jamar Charles, and Chance Charles.

Kim was a loyal husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, coach, and friend. He is survived by his wife, Beatrice Charles. They shared a deep partnership in life and in service. Together, they opened and operated Mrs. Bea's Soul Food, a restaurant that reflected Kim's passion for Southern cooking and bringing people together around good food and fellowship. He is also survived by his stepsons: Malcolm Carter, Alex Carter, and Alvin Carter (Tabitha), as well as his nephew, Marcus Murray.

Those who knew Kim will fondly remember his voice - both spoken and sung. He had a beautiful, powerful singing voice that joyfully carried the Word of God. He was known for favorite phrases that reflected his humor and wisdom: when asked how he was doing he often replied, "I'm doing the best I can with what I got," and, delivered in his signature booming voice, "SOMEBODY SAY AMEN!" To his boys, his loving guidance often came with the reminder to, "Use your head besides a hat rack!"

The time spent on the water fishing with his children, brothers, and friends - and later gathered around a plate of freshly cooked fish - brought him peace and laughter. An enthusiastic gardener, Kim was exhilarated by working the soil and nurturing growth. He not only maintained his own annual garden but generously helped friends and relatives with theirs, always willing to share his time, knowledge, and hard work.

He leaves behind a legacy of love, leadership, and quiet strength that will continue to live on through all who knew and loved him.
