Kimiko Suyemasa
Resident of Cupertino
Passed away peacefully surrounded by family at home on Jan. 10, 2018, age 103. Born to Shinajiro and Kiku Sugimoto. Survived by sons, James and Kenneth Suyemasa, daughter, Marian Tsukamoto, granddaughter Elaine Sarpola, sister Evelyn Kanada and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by brothers Fred and James Sugimoto. A single mother of three, she worked day and night and brought home ironing. Bought a home in San Mateo after nine years of saving. Began to study Ikenobo Ikebana in 1950's. Received professor degree, continued to study under various professors in Japan. Ikenobo Headmaster in Kyoto assigned flower name, Suichiku. Dedicated member of Northern California Ikenobo Ikebana Society, displayed Rikka arrangements for window of San Francisco Ikenobo HQ. Member of the San Mateo Ikenobo Kado Kenkyu Kai, demonstrated and lectured Ikebana annually at San Mateo County Fair. Lectured on the history of Ikenobo Ikebana at opening ceremony of San Mateo Japanese Tea Garden in Central Park. Member of the San Mateo Buddhist Temple and its Buddhist Women's Assn. Enjoyed teaching at Foster City Rec Center for over 25 yrs. Through kindness of loyal students continued passion for Ikenobo Ikebana up to Dec 2017 less than a month of her demise.
Funeral service on Sunday, February 4, 2018, 2:00pm, at the San Mateo Buddhist Temple. 2 South Claremont Street, San Mateo.
