Kurian Varghese

Kurian (Kunjumon) Varghese, 79, of West Hartford, CT, peacefully went home to be with the Lord on July 12, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was born on August 14, 1945, in Kozhencherry, Kerala (Palathumthalakal) to Mariamma and P.V. Varughese (Bai). He worked for the American Red Cross in Farmington for 42 years. Kurian deeply cared for issues around justice, advocacy, and empowerment of others. He was one of the founding members and President of the Kerala Association of Connecticut (KACT), served on Federation of Malayalee Associations of Americas (FOMAA) as regional Vice President, and served with Volunteer Service for Education in India (VSEI).

Kurian is survived by his beloved wife, Mariamma (Lizy) Varghese of 53 years; his three daughters, Anita and her husband Ravi Srinivasan, Ruby Varghese, and Jessica Varghese. Kurian was preceded in death by his two sisters, Molly and Lily (India) and his three grandchildren, Uma and Aakash Srinivasan, and Amelia Varghese.

Arriving in the United States in the early 70's, leaving everything he had in pursuit of the American Dream, he made it his life mission to help support new immigrants, foster community, and gather resources so others would also thrive in their pursuits. He did this by opening his home, offering rides, sharing tips and tricks on how to survive life in a new country, and provided as many resources with others as he could. In his spare time, he loved to write, listen to music, garden, and travel to his homeland in Kerala.

Kurian walked this earth with joy, laughter, kindness, compassion, courage, and sacrificial love for his family and friends, which was a witness of his faith in God. While he no longer is with us here on earth, his spirit lives on in our hearts till we meet again in Heaven. "The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want. He has me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He revives my soul; He guides me on paths of righteousness for His glory. Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no harm, for you are with me ... Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, And I shall abide in the house of the Lord forever." -PSALM 23.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Bethany Covenant Church, 785 Mill Street, Berlin, CT, at 1:00 PM on Saturday, (August 16), with a light reception following the Service.
