Elba Iris Rodriguez Hernandez, 68, of West Hartford, known affectionately as Iris to her family and friends, passed away peacefully on September 3, 2025, in Bloomfield, CT, after a brave battle with cancer. Born on September 16, 1956, in the town of San Sebastian, Puerto Rico, Iris brought joy and light into the world that will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Iris was the beloved daughter of the late Jose Rodriguez Guivas and Rosa Hernandez Rodriguez. She was one of 12 children, a cherished sister to Gloria Rodriguez, Jose Luis Rodriguez, Ana Maria Rodriguez, Carmen Rodriguez, Candida Rodriguez, Jose Angel Rodriguez, Israel Rodriguez, Anibal Rodriguez, Wilfredo Rodriguez, Eneida Rodriguez, and Haydee Rodriguez. Her parents and five siblings (Gloria, Jose Luis, Carmen, Wilfredo & Eneida) preceded her in death, leaving behind a legacy of love and strength that Iris carried throughout her life. Iris loved her siblings deeply and always maintained her connection to them.
Iris was a devoted mother to Arlene Velazquez of West Hartford, Ramon Rivera of Wethersfield, and Giovanni Rivera of West Hartford. She was a loving mother-in-law to Luis D. Velazquez, Maria Rivera and Darlene. Her role as a grandmother was one, she treasured deeply, showering love upon her grandchildren Giovanni Jr., Eziah, Everin, Elias, Akira, Gianni, Ella, Eliza, and Jefferson. Her granddaughter, Emma, preceded her in death. She was also a doting aunt to many nieces and nephews, each of whom held a special place in her heart.
Iris's life was one of dedication and care as she embraced her role as a homemaker. She was a pillar of strength and support for her family, always putting their needs above her own. Her selfless nature was evident in every aspect of her life, and she was known for her loving and friendly demeanor.
Her education, which spanned public schools in Puerto Rico, New York, and Connecticut, culminated in her graduation with a high school diploma. Iris's love for learning was something she passed on to her children, instilling in them the value of education and hard work.
Iris had a zest for life, enjoying simple pleasures such as playing Bingo, watching telenovelas, listening to Spanish music, and spending time with her grandchildren. These interests brought her immense joy and provided her with a source of relaxation and entertainment.
The words that best describe Iris are loving, friendly, and selfless. She approached life with a kindness that was as boundless as it was genuine. Her presence was a comfort to those around her, and her ability to connect with people was truly remarkable.
Iris's memory will be cherished and kept alive through the stories and moments shared by her family and friends. Her legacy of love and selflessness will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know her. Iris's life was a testament to the beauty of a heart given freely to others, and she will be deeply missed.
As we say farewell to Iris, we take solace in knowing that her spirit will live on in the memories we hold dear. Her laughter, her warmth, and the love she so freely gave will never be forgotten.
