Childhood: Kurt grew up in Sugarville, Utah and on the Ekker Ranch in the Sheeprock Mountains.
Growing up, Kurt would help his family with chores on the family farm and ranch. When he wasn't needed to help with the cattle or in the fields, he was riding motorcycles and camping with his friends.
Kurt started riding motorcycles when he was about 13 years old. This led to him owning a motorcycle collection in his early years and his early racing career in desert racing and motocross in Utah, winning multiple trophies over the years between 1978-1983 from ages 16-21. He continued riding throughout his life and taught both his children, and any of the neighbor kids in Lincoln, Utah who showed interest.
Throughout his entire life, he was an avid lover of nature and a passionate environmental activist. From leading Sierra Club trips, to organizing hiking groups, taking people to the West Desert and showing them the Onaqui herd of wild horses, and Notch Peak, sharing nature was when he was in his element and at his happiest.
One of Kurt's favorite authors was Edward Abbey, which he influenced his daughter Saige to read. They both particularly loved Desert Solitude. To share a quote that would encapsulate his ardent and impassioned beliefs:
"In the first place you can't see anything from a car; you've got to get out of the goddamned contraption and walk, better yet crawl, on hands and knees, over the sandstone and through the thornbush and cactus. When traces of blood begin to mark your trail, you'll see something, maybe."
While that may come across as a bit callous, it means that to truly experience and appreciate the outdoors, you need to immerse yourself in nature.
His son Kaio's favorite memories with Kurt revolve around annual trips to Lower Calf Creek Falls, Boulder, UT with the Sierra Club. Kurt would lead the hike to the falls, stopping along the trail to point out the pictographs on the cliff walls. Upon reaching the falls, Kurt would play his Native American flute, creating beautiful and haunting music that was always unforgettable.
His beloved wife Gail recalls Kurt as someone who dearly loved her and tested her outdoor knowledge over the years. He kept her on her toes with numerous adventures such as great road trips, working on the ranch, backpacking, and learning how to fish. In fact, she recalls how he stated he wouldn't marry her until seeing how she handled herself on a backpacking trip in Escalante; on this trip, they ended up experiencing a flash flood, and Gail was caught in quicksand. When they weren't on such daring escapades, they loved building a beautiful home and life together.
Education and Career:
Kurt graduated from Delta High School in 1980.
Kurt earned a BSc in Natural Resources Management at University of Wyoming and an ASc in Pre-Law/Archaeology from Southern Utah University.
Kurt worked for years as an environmental engineer/scientist/consultant and owned and managed Desert Quest Ventures, where he focused on agricultural conservation and wildlife habitat management.
