Kyle Robert Brown

Kyle Robert Brown was born March 26, 1970 in San Luis Obispo, California. His parents Bob and Chris Brown were living there while Bob trained at Camp Roberts Army Base. When Kyle was five months old, Bob left for Vietnam, and he became his mother’s comfort and buddy during that trying time.  He valiantly fought his battle with ALS and passed away August 15, 2023.

Kyle grew up in Centerville, Utah in the 70’s when kids roamed from neighbor to neighbor and only came home for dinner. He attended Centerville Elementary, Centerville Jr. High, and graduated from Viewmont High School with the class of ‘88.  Kyle was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He loved his leaders and his time in scouting and received the rank of Eagle Scout.

Kyle was married to Alison Grundy in 1992 and had their son Lance in 2002. Alison and Kyle later divorced.

Kyle and Lance’s relationship is special. Kyle loved being a father to Lance, and they became best friends and adventurers.

Kyle met Colleen through a mutual gym where they both taught. She attended his spin class and after a few years they became inseparable. Kyle became her support and partner in raising her four children, making a band of seven that would create amazing memories together for many years.  Kyle proposed to Colleen on top of Francis Peak, the day of his ALS diagnosis, and they were married in the same location three weeks later.

From the time Kyle was a toddler he loved animals. He loved bugs, snakes, turtles, hamsters, and eventually dogs. Kyle was active in rescuing Greyhounds from race tracks for many years.

Kyle had multiple occupations in life. He was a trained Cartographer and worked several years in that profession. He dabbled in real estate and flipping homes. When his love of fitness grew he taught various group classes at multiple gyms in Davis County. Spin class, body pump class, and core classes. He was always a favorite no matter where he taught. At one particular gym, if you did not arrive 15-30 minutes early you would NOT get a bike that day. He holds the record for longest running spin class at the previous Gold’s/Vasa in Bountiful teaching there every Monday morning for 20+ years. The jobs he is most known for are his car dealership in Bountiful and his sales position at BackCountry.com in their bike division Competitive Cyclist. Kyle loved both cars and bikes.  He sold and played with cars via his dealership Kennadie Christian Motors for multiple years where he had partners and friends in the business. He chose to close his dealership in 2013 and although he continued to buy and sell cars, he threw himself full force into his new career at Competitive Cyclist. Quickly it became his goal to be the highest grossing salesman, and he accomplished this goal year after year.  Kyle was awarded the company's highest honor, known at the GOTY award, two years consecutively.  The award was renamed to the Kyle Brown GOTY , because the company now encourages employees to exemplify the work ethic and attitude of Kyle Brown.

Kyle did not show much interest in regular sports. He found a love for skateboarding, paragliding, and snowboarding, and even dabbled with speed skating. Kyle eventually started riding a road bike to build fitness for skateboarding, and soon fell in love with road biking. There he met some of his closest friends and built his greatest relationships. Kyle was always one to push his own limits physically. Everyone who has ever ridden with Kyle knows he is a fierce competitor unafraid of pain. He raced Lotoja from its first years, in total racing it eight times. Kyle held a presence in the local Utah Cycling Association race scene for over 20 years, and in 2010 added triathlons to his list of races to complete. Kyle was almost always top step of the podium at local triathlons. He turned his focus to bigger triathlons, training for and racing in the Ironman 70.3 seven different times in St. George, Utah, including the 70.3 Ironman World Championships in 2021.

He dabbled with mountain biking over the years but truly found it when he got his son and Colleen’s son involved in the Davis High Mountain Bike Team. Kyle has mentored and coached kids from age 12-18 for eight years. It truly became his greatest love. The connection and joy he received from coaching kids on bikes forever changed him.

After a long struggle to find a diagnosis for his strange symptoms, the diagnosis of ALS came on July 16th 2021. Kyle chose very quickly to follow a motto that he believes in: “When faced with tragedy, We come alive or come undone.”

Kyle chose to come alive. During this period, Kyle was married on a mountain top, took two trips to Hawaii, spending precious time with his son and wife and kids. He continued to train and race the Ironman. He continued coaching the mountain bike team. He spent time with his wife and children, always knowing they were his greatest win in life.

He is survived by his wife Colleen, son Lance, step children, Trent, Jack, Nina and Chase Neider, parents, Bob and Chris Brown, sister, Heather (Jordan) Bailey, brothers, Colton (Angella), Trenton  (Jill) and Jordan (Miriam) Brown, father in-law Rulon Peck, brothers in-law Mark Peck (JoDean), Roger Peck (Doug Neff), sister-in law Jill Koudelka, many aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews, and nieces who will all miss him dearly. 

Preceded in death by his grandparents Howard and Rae Brown, and Phil and Jean Bernard,  aunt Barbara Williams, mother in-law Janet Mecham Peck, and brother in-law Joe Koudelka.

A Celebration of Life will be held on August 19th at 11:30am at the CenterPoint Theatre located at 525 N 400 W in Centerville.

On Friday, August 18th from 7pm-dusk at the Farmington Pond Park, located at 750 N. 75 W, there will be an informal visitation where you can bring your own chair, drink, and memories to share. There will also be a short visitation August 19th  prior to the service from 9:30-11:15am at the theatre in Centerville. Following the services there will be a group bike ride to the Farmington Cemetery. Route and details on social media.
