Kyungsook (née Kim) Yoon was born in Seoul, Korea on May 29,1934. She was the third child in a family of six children. Although her studies were interrupted by the Korean War, she graduated at the top of her class from Ewha High School. She married MooSung Yoon and gave birth to a son, Joo Hong in 1957.
The young family came to America so that her husband could study engineering at Walla Walla University in Washington state. Encouraged by her elder sister, Nancy, Kyungsook moved to Chicago and raised her son and a younger daughter, Mimi, who was born in 1962. She moved her family to the suburb of Glenview, seeking the best education and environment for her children.
Throughout her life, she was a successful business owner. She owned a beauty salon in Chicago for many years. Her loyal customers knew her by her nickname, "Ming." In the late Eighties, she saw that a related industry was booming and decided to open a beauty supply. She prospered until retiring at the age of 70.
In retirement, she continued rescuing unwanted and abandoned dogs. She loved walking her shih-tzus and befriending fellow dog-lovers. She also used her free time to make delicious Korean food and the best kimchee for her family and friends. Although it became difficult to get out due to her physical health issues, she remained curious about the world and especially engaged with Korean politics and the state of her homeland.
She credited God and reading the Bible daily for granting her wisdom, patience, and renewed optimism in facing life's challenges.
She died peacefully at home on March 24, 2025.
She is survived by her two younger sisters (YoungSook and HyoSook), her daughter, Mimi, six granddaughters (Mira, Marisa, Mariah, Iris, Esther, and Ilana), two great grandchildren (Aiden and Aralyn), and eight nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Sunday, March 30, 2025 starting at 4:30 PM CST and the memorial service follows at 5PM at N.H. Scott & Hanekamp Funeral Home, 1240 Waukegan Road, Glenview. Live Stream Link.
