Lambert “Buddy” Perry Hammond, 91, passed away on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, in Spartanburg, SC. He was the son of the late Lambert Jones Hammond and Margaret Virginia Griffin.
Buddy was born and raised in Spartanburg, SC. He graduated from Spartan High in 1951, as the Senior Class President and quarterback of the football team. He went on to attend Wofford College for two years, where he also played football.
After two years in college, Lambert and Betty were married and moved to Chapel Hill, NC where Buddy attended the University of North Carolina, and Betty took a job in the school office.
In 1954, their first child was born, a daughter, Deborah Lynn. After Buddy graduated in 1955 with a business degree, he joined the United States Air Force. During this time in 1956 their second daughter, Betty Ann was born, and in 1957 their son, Perry Christopher was born.
After Buddy graduated as a United States Air Force pilot, the family moved to Chicopee, Mass. where Buddy flew KC-97 air, refueling tanker aircraft at Westover Air Force.
After his term in service, he returned to Spartanburg and went to work in the family business, Hammond-Brown-Jennings Furniture Company. He managed the Goodwill store, and later became the President and buyer for their main store. Betty also worked in the main store office handling account management and bookkeeping. Buddy and Betty both retired in 2000.
Buddy and Betty were members of Trinity Methodist Church in Spartanburg, where they helped with Sunday Youth Programs, Sunday School, and Boy Scouts. Buddy also held a membership with the Spartanburg Sertoma Downtown.
Buddy is survived by his two daughters, Deborah Lynn Allen, Betty Ann Ridley (Keith Ridley) and Missey Hammond Keim (Tom Keim); 17 grand-children, 34 great-grand-children, and 1 great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Betty Hammond; his son, Perry Christopher; great-grandson, Austin Thomas; sister, Peggy Hammond Whitehead; and his brothers, Dempsey B. Hammond, Sr., Thomas H. Hammond and his son-in-law John W. Allen, Jr.
The family will receive friends 10:00 am - 10:45 am, Saturday, October 26, 2024, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307.
A memorial service will be follow at 11:00 am in the chapel. The inurnment will be held in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307, services will be officiated by the Rev. Ricky Howell.
