Lanny Preston Smith

Lanny Preston Smith, 83, of Lexington, passed away October 30, 2025, at his residence. He was born on February 24, 1942 to James Preston Smith and Vera Kay Koon.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Mary Redmond Smith; children, Danny (Margaret) Smith and Cindy (Drew) Shealy; and grandchildren, Rebecca (Alex) McGinnis, Bryce Smith and Emily (Eddie) Hernandez; and great grandchildren, Penelope, Brinton, Maverick, Milo, Julia and Isabell; and siblings, 2 sisters and 1 brother.
Lanny retired with more than 25 years of service to the State of South Carolina. Last employed at the Forestry Commission as an equipment fabricator.
He is mostly remembered as a dirt track race car champion. He spent over six decades in the racing industry, inspiring countless others with his passion for building and racing cars. As Smith's Motor Sports, he sold parts, built engines and provided setup recommendations. He was always willing to lend a helping hand or offer advice.

The family will receive friends at the Boiling Springs Methodist Church Family Ministries Building on November 14, 2025 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. A short graveside service will follow visitation at the Boiling Springs Methodist Church Cemetery with Pastor Gregory Gunter.
