Larry Roy Carr
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Larry Carr, age 80, of Akron, Ohio who passed away peacefully on January 11, 2025.
Larry was born on October 4, 1944 in Akron, Ohio and raised by his grandparents, Dessie and Harry Thurston. He grew up in Akron and graduated from East High School. Larry proudly served six years in the US Navy on the USS Oak Hill stationed in San Diego, CA. Larry was known for his quick wit, hilarious sense of humor and love of music. Larry was a devoted spouse, parent, grandparent, son-in-law, uncle and friend who cherished his family.
During a leave from the service, Larry’s best friend suggested he meet ‘the girl next door’…like, literally. While Larry was walking up to his friend’s front door, little did he know, the girl next door was watching him and told her mother, “I’m going to marry that guy.” They met and their relationship bloomed through a year of letter-writing. Two weeks into his final leave from the service, Larry and the girl next door, Colleen, were engaged.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Colleen Carr; daughter Kimberly Abdallah (Dave); sons Kevin Carr (Irma), Keith Carr (Valerie); grandchildren Alexander Abdallah, Andreas Carr, Jason Abdallah, Kostas Carr, Katelyn Carr, Kyler Carr; best friend Dan Callahan (Merry); and many nieces, nephews and in-laws.
Services will be held on Sunday, January 19th. Friends and family are welcome to attend calling hours from 12 p.m.-2 p.m., with military honors/memorial service starting promptly at 2 p.m., all at Newcomer Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Grace House Akron Inc. in Larry Carr’s honor.
