Larry Chaney Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Santa Cruz Memorial Funeral Home - Mission Chapel on Mar. 9, 2026.
Larry Lee Chaney, age 87, passed away peacefully on March 2, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family in Felton, California.

Larry was born in 1938 in Aurora, Nebraska, to his parents, George Dewey Chaney and Ethel Pearl Mapes. As a young boy, he and his brothers Wayne, Kenny, and Dale moved with their parents to Woodside, California, where he grew up and began building the foundation of his life. He graduated from Sequoia High School in Redwood City before proudly entering active duty with the United States Marine Corps. Larry served at Camp Pendleton until 1957 and continued his commitment in the Marine Corps Reserves through 1964. He carried the discipline, strength, loyalty, and quiet pride of a Marine throughout his entire life.

Following his military service, Larry pursued his education and a career in the trade of construction plumbing. For more than 37 years, he helped build homes throughout the Bay Area, contributing not only to the homes themselves but to the foundations of countless families' lives. He took great pride in his craftsmanship, his integrity, and the honest, hard work he did with his hands.

Above all else, Larry was a devoted husband and father. He shared a loving marriage with his beloved wife, Betty, from 1972 until her passing in 2013. Their bond was strong and enduring, and he now joins her once again.

Larry is survived by his children, Rick (Carrie), Tom (Andi), Eugene, and Lisa (Sue). He was preceded in death by his daughter, Julie. His love, guidance, work ethic, humor, and steady presence will live on in each of them and in the generations that follow, including his grandchildren Doug, Jesse, Haley, Jenna, Brandon, Danielle, Desirae, Robin, William, and Timmy, as well as his great-grandchildren.

Larry also shared a special friendship with his devoted friend and caregiver, Jim. Larry often expressed to his family how important Jim was to him and how grateful he felt for his generosity, friendship, and support. Together with Larry's dog, Boo Boo, they enjoyed many joyful daily outings-trips to the redwoods, laughter-filled days, and adventures exploring the beaches of Santa Cruz County. Those moments brought him great happiness and comfort and remained close to his heart.

Most of all, Larry will be remembered as a man of strength and quiet kindness-a Marine, a builder, a provider, and most importantly, a loving father and friend.

Larry will be deeply missed and forever held in the hearts of all who loved him.
