Larry P. Chilcoat passed away peacefully on November 17, 2025. He was 78 years old. Larry was born on August 13, 1947 to Joseph P. and Hency Kirby Chilcoat in Duncan, Oklahoma. He graduated from Victoria High School in 1966 and retired from the Victoria Dupont plant in 2003. After retirement Larry and his wife DJ moved from Victoria to Rockport, Texas where he enjoyed the laid back lifestyle and the freedom to do or not do anything he wanted. He loved his God, his family, and his country. He was an avid fan of the Houston Astros and the Dallas Cowboys.
Larry served in the United States Air Force as a security policeman military working dog handler. During his tour in Vietnam in 1969, his MWD, a German Shepherd named Geisha. Geisha had his back and made sure he always got home safely. He spent the rest of his life telling anyone who would listen about the life saving capabilities of MWD.. He would show everyone the picture of Geisha that he always had in his wallet and would setup his memorabilia, and give talks whenever and wherever anyone asked. A photo of Larry and Geisha was featured in the movie War Dogs, America's Forgotten Heroes. One of the highlights of his life was being a member of the all veteran dog handler Board of Directors for the Military Working Dog Teams National Monument project honoring all MWDs past, present, and future. The National Monument is located at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas and is open to the public and their dogs. Larry was a life member of the Vietnam Dog Handlers Association (VDHA).
Survivors include the love of his life, Donna (DJ) Chilcoat; son, Erin Chilcoat (Norah); brother, Jimmy Chilcoat; granddaughter, Gwyneth Chilcoat; step-son, Greg Waters (Katie); step-grands, Kyle and Zach Waters (Claire), Kendall (Enrique) Perez, and Isabella Boer.
The Holy Rosary will be recited on Thursday, November 20, 2025 at 9:00 am. A Mass will be celebrated also Thursday, November 20, 2024 at 10:00 am both will be held at at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church 209 N. Church St. Rockport, Texas.
Burial with full military honors will be on Friday, November 21, 2025 at 9:00 am at the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, Larry requested that memorials be made to https://texasequusearch.org/make-a-donation/ a nonprofit volunteer search and recovery organization that helps bring home missing loved ones and they never charge the families anything.
