Funeral Service for Larry Eugene Van Der Vliet will be on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, at Grace Lutheran Church, Sisseton, South Dakota at 2:00 P.M. with Assistant Pastor Robert Rennie and Rory Iverson officiating. Organist will be Michelle Greseth and soloist will be Vicar Pat Schubert. Pall Bearers will be Mark Bals, Ryan DeBoer, Carter Heumiller, Issiah Heumiller, Andrew Brown, Cayce Hoeke, Slade Parmely, Tryton Parmely, Ryker Parmely, Cody Olauson, Colby Olauson, Colton Hoeke, Wes Heylens, Matthew Olauson and Charlie Heylens. Honorary Pall Bearers will be Ethan Schmid, Rory Iverson, Mark Hove, Troy Jaacks, Brett Jaacks, Wade Jaacks, Shawn Jaacks, Matt Jaacks, Matt Anderson, Ryan Jaacks and All of Larry's Friends and Loved Ones. Interment will be in the Goodwill Cemetery, Sisseton, SD. There will be a visitation on Monday, January 27, 2025 from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the Buffalo Lake Church, Eden, South Dakota. Cahill Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Larry Eugene Van Der Vliet was born January 3, 1948, to Harold and Betty (DeKnikker) Van Der Vliet of Colton, South Dakota. He is the oldest of six children. Larry was baptized and confirmed at the Dutch Reform Church. Larry attended Country School through eighth grade and finished his high school years in Brookings, South Dakota graduating with the Class of 1967. Shortly after graduation, he was drafted into the Army during the Vietnam era in which he was sent to Germany. While he was there, he drove secret service trucks. After his service, he was united in marriage and to this union Stacy, Sarah, and Joshua were born. He farmed by Goodwin, South Dakota and worked at Twin City Fan in Brookings, South Dakota for 17 years as a machinist. In 2003, he met Connie Olauson, and they married in 2005. They lived in the hills of Sisseton and he worked at Teals Market. Larry was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, son, brother, uncle, and friend. He enjoyed spending time with his family and watching Westerns. He loved starting his day with devotion and reading the Bible with Connie. Larry passed away on January 23, 2025, at his home with Connie by his side.
Larry is survived by his wife Connie of Sisseton, South Dakota; and his children Stacy (Chad) Parmely of Pierre, South Dakota, Sarah (Jason) Heumiller of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Joshua (Megan) Van Der Vliet of Flandreau, South Dakota; Erling (Tammy) Olauson of Benton, Maine, Steve (CC) Olauson of Greensboro, Maryland, Melissa (Jeff) Olauson of Aurora, South Dakota and Jenna (Thomas) Heylens of Volga, South Dakota; grandchildren Hayle (Mark) Bals, Alexis (Ryan) DeBoer, Carter and Issiah Heumiller, Slade, Tryton, Ryker Parmely, Andrew (Brianna) Brown, Cody (Brittany) Olauson, Matthew (Lexi) Olauson, Colby and Jennessa Olauson, Cayce and Colton Hoeke, and Wes and Charlie Heylens; great-grandchildren Krew, Lydia, Noah, Bricelynn, Oaklee, Aria, Vi, Aubree, Reagan, Cash, and Rhett; siblings Beverly (Jerry) Thon, Ruth (Kevin) Price, Allan (Janelle) Van Der Vliet, Loren (Kathy) Van Der Vliet, Wayne (Karen) Van Der Vliet, and many nieces and nephews.
Larry is preceded in death by parents Harold and Betty Ann (DeKnikker); grandparents; aunts; uncles; and three great grand rainbow babies.
