Larry T. Ford of Pleasant Grove, passed away on Saturday, October 5th, after a brief illness. He was 82 years old and had been a resident of Pleasant Grove for forty-six years.
Larry was born on July 29, 1942, in Jasper, Alabama, to Sam and Stella Mae Ford. He attended Thach High School, but chose to serve his country and joined the army at age seventeen. After serving his enlistment, he was married to the former Libby Gober and they moved to the western side of Birmingham to raise their daughter and son, Sammie and Sonny. Larry worked at Pullman Standard in Bessemer and volunteered as a softball coach for Sammie and a football and baseball coach for Sonny. Larry enjoyed playing softball himself and played many years on various teams in Pleasant Grove and Bessemer. He developed many friendships with his teammates that lasted throughout his life.
In 2002, several years after his first marriage ended, Larry married Judith Taylor of Trussville and they made their home in Pleasant Grove. They were able to build their dream home and they have enjoyed many years there. In retirement, Larry and Judi travelled to Europe on different trips and soaked in all the sights, museums and tastes that the continent could offer.
Throughout his life, Larry was known for his humor and his willingness to help others. He served as a coach in youth athletics and, in retirement, he served other veterans.
Larry is survived by his wife Judi, his children Sammie Hyde (Del) and Sonny Ford (Laura), step children Debbie Taylor and Steven Taylor, and his grandchildren Trey Hyde, Emma Moore, Kate and Lily Beth Ford.
A memorial service will be held at Patterson-Forest Grove Funeral Home in Pleasant Grove on Thursday, October 24, 2024. Visitation is from 6:00 – 7:00 PM with a service to follow.
