Obituary published on Legacy.com by Marcus D. Brown Funeral Home, Inc. - Anderson on Jan. 25, 2026.
After 74 years of a life well-lived, we announce with heavy hearts that our beloved father, husband, PaPa, uncle, and friend, Larry Eugene Gray, went home to rest in the loving arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Saturday, January 24, 2026.
Larry was born on February 4, 1951 in
Little Rock, Arkansas. Though he was a man of few words, those who knew him understood that his quiet presence spoke volumes. His infectious laugh could light up any room, and his warm smile reflected the deep pride he felt for his family and the joy he found in life's simple pleasures. The wisdom he shared, though delivered sparingly, will continue to guide our steps forward.
Larry found peace in life's quieter moments-casting a line by the lake, the gentle rhythm of fishing offering him solace and reflection. He also cherished the camaraderie of competitive bowling leagues, where he built friendships that would last a lifetime.
A 1973 graduate of Lane College in Jackson, Tennessee, Larry dedicated his professional life to lifting others up. For 30 years, he served as a counselor with South Carolina's Vocational Rehabilitation Center, where he helped hundreds of men and women find their footing and restart their lives with dignity and hope.
Drawing on his theological training from Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC) in Atlanta, Georgia, Larry continued his calling to serve through his part-time work as a patient advocate with AnMed Health. For the 20 years in this role, his compassionate presence and deep faith brought comfort to countless families facing the heartbreaking loss of loved ones.
Larry grew his faith in Christ and worshiped the Creator as a member of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in Starr, South Carolina.
Larry was also a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, where he found brotherhood and opportunities to serve his community.
His love permeated our souls and touched everyone who knew him. His life embodied the words of 1 Corinthians 13:4-8: "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away."
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene Gray and Geraldine (Taylor) Rogers and two siblings, Cynthia Gray and Marvin Jenkins.
Larry is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Betty Randolph Gray; his children, Celerie Gray White (Clyde) and Corey Anthony Gray (Stephanie); his four grandchildren who he adored, Christian White, Cameron White, Corey A. Gray, Jr. and Joy Gray; his siblings, Anthony Gray (Phyllis), Kenneth Gray (Elsie), Eugene Gray, Jr. (Frieda), Shirley Hammons (Odell), Dameter J. Gray (Riley), Delois Williams, Josalin "Gena" Gray, Kimberlin Gray, Bishop T.L. Hood (Karen), Donald Ray Gray (Dana) and Eugene Dewayne Gray (Safonda) along with many other cherished nieces, nephews, loving family members and dear friends.
We will treasure our memories of him and carry his love in our hearts forever.
A celebration of Larry's life will be held on Friday, January 30, 2026, at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, 4909 SC-81, Starr, SC 29684. The men of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated will hold an Omega service at 10:00 a.m. in the church sanctuary. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m. and a graveside ceremony will immediately follow.
