Larry Johnston Obituary

Larry R. Johnston, 89, passed away on January 10, 2026. Born on August 30, 1936, Larry was the beloved son of Alton and Elinor Johnston. He was preceded in death by his parents, his devoted wife of 33 years Joanna Wycoff Johnston.

Larry proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. Following his service, he began a long and dedicated career with Ford Motor Company, working as a boltmaker from 1957 until his retirement in 1997.

A man of many passions, Larry was well known for his love of trains and the extensive, meticulously crafted layout he built over the years. He was also an enthusiastic drag car racer, proudly displaying the trophies he earned through his skill and determination on the track.

Above all, Larry was a wonderful and loving husband, father, grandfather, and son. His kindness, humor, and steady presence enriched the lives of all who knew him. He was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed.

A graveside service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 18, 2026 at Miller Cemetery in Shelbyville.

I'm so, so sorry to hear of Larry's passing! I will never forget his kindnesses to Nikki and Ty, so long ago, and sorry for losing communications with him. My heart is with those who have loved him.

You were a wonderful father and papaw! You gave us guidance, unwavering support and all the love a daughter and grandson could wish for! Your stories were always so intriguing, your jokes relentless! We always loved how you could take a word and turn it into a song you knew.
We will hold you in our hearts until we all meet again!! I love you more than you could possibly imagine!
