Larry Moon Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Rogers Mortuary - Las Vegas on Jan. 26, 2026.
Larry Edward Moon was born in Yates, New Mexico, on November 10, 1942, the second son to C. Odel Moon and Dorothy Marie Hoffman. He left this earthly plain to go to his eternal rest with God on January 16, 2026.
He was born at home with a neighbor as a midwife. He was a blue baby and the midwife was part of the reason he lived to be a strong husky baby. The family relocated several times, finally settling in Roy, New Mexico.
Larry was a mischievous child. When Larry was two or three years old, he got on a tractor and brought a wind charger down on the house. Another time, Larry got into the pickup and managed to start it, but at 3 years old he couldn't see where he was going and, again, it crashed into the house. Even at three years old, he was learning how things worked, something he did throughout his life.
When Larry was 12, he was given a baby raven. The raven, Blackie, was as mischievous as Larry, plucking off neighbors 'clothespins to drop clean clothes on the ground and collecting shiny objects. It was quite a sight to see Larry driving his father's small school bus down the road to one of the many jobs he held, with Blackie flying along outside the bus.
Larry's father worked at Pendleton's as a mechanic, where Larry got a job at eight years old sweeping the floor. Later, he worked at the movie theater in town. Along with all the jobs he undertook, Larry played every sport in school and played in the school marching band. Larry never knew a stranger even as a youngster.
In 1961, Larry married Pat (Patsy) Horn at the First Baptist Church in Roy, New Mexico. Larry and Pat chose to go to California to start their new life together. Their honeymoon was the trip to California as they traveled across the country. Larry's brother James had already settled there with his wife. The two brothers had many family gatherings.
Larry and Pat had three children, Natalie, 1963, Michael, 1966, and Melborne, 1971. James also had three children to add to the family. In the summer of '68, Odel retired and Larry's parents moved to California. Unfortunately, Odel died 11 months later at 61 and never got to meet his last grandchild. His mother Dorothy lived until the age of 97, dying in 2013.
Larry loved to sing and listen to music. He sang when he was in school, imitating people like Elvis Presley and Pat Boone. Pat was also a musician and was the piano player for the family. As Larry and Pat's kids grew, they often sang around the piano. Larry sang lead, tenor, or bass, depending on what was needed and what he liked to sing. There are lots of memories around a piano. Their kids all grew up to be musicians.
Although Larry had only a high school diploma, he used his intellect and creativity in jobs way beyond his educational level, including inventing equipment. He was always a conscientious, hard worker and inspired people under him to also work hard. His childhood reputation as a monkey even came into play as he installed audiovisual equipment and completed an extensive renovation for their Mariposa, CA, home, including adding a pitched roof.
People say Larry lived his life with a smile and compassion for others. He always asked how they were before he talked about himself. Larry was also known for his cooking, specializing in bread, pizza, and cayenne eggs.
Larry is survived by his wife Pat, his children, Natalie (David), Michael (Dawn) and Melborne, eight grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Odel and Dorothy, and his brother, James.
