Larry D. Niese
OTTAWA – Larry D. Niese, 73, of Ottawa, passed away at 2:50 a.m. on Wednesday, November 6, 2024 at The Meadows of Ottawa surrounded by his loving family. He was born March 8, 1951, in Lima to the late Arthur B. and Mary A. (Kuhlman) Niese. On May 16, 1970, he married Brenda Klear, who survives in Ottawa.
Larry is also survived by three children: Kelly (Oran) Verhoff of Miller City, Beckie (Chad) Vorst of Ottawa, Brad (Carla) Niese of Ottawa; eight grandchildren: Claire and Grayson Verhoff, Kalin, Carter, Ragen and Payton Vorst, and Addelyn and Bo Niese; seven siblings: Judy Schreiber, Margie (Bob) Chamberlin, both of Ottawa, Ron (Kathy) Niese of Miller City, Steve (Vic) Niese of Leipsic, Duane Niese of Ottawa, Mike (Brandy Opperman) Niese of Middlepoint, Tina (Tom) Niese of Miller City; and a sister-in-law, Karen Niese of New Cleveland.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by three siblings: Tommy Niese, Kenny Niese and Mary Lou Niese; a brother-in-law, Joe Schreiber; and a sister-in-law, Lorrie Niese.
Larry was a veteran of the United States Army and served in Vietnam. He worked at Philips, Ottawa for 33 years and then went on to be a popular bar manager at the Ottawa Eagles for 18 years, where he was a member. He was also a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Ottawa, Ottawa American Legion, Ottawa VFW, Leipsic Eagles and Miller City Sportsmans Club. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, horseshoes (to which he built quite a trophy collection over the years), and "taking everyone's money" playing cards. Larry was an avid fan of The Ohio State Buckeyes, Cleveland Browns and Detroit Tigers. He loved spending time with his family, especially attending his grandchildren's sporting events.
Funeral Mass will begin at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, November 9, 2024, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Ottawa with Fr. Scott Kramer officiating. Military honors will follow outside the church after the Mass by the Ottawa VFW, Ottawa American Legion, AMVETS and DAV. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. on Friday and one hour prior on Saturday at LOVE FUNERAL HOME, Ottawa.
Memorial donations may be made to Flag City Honor Flight (www.flagcityhonorflight.org).
In lieu of traditional thank you cards, the family will be making an additional contribution to the Flag City Honor Flight.
