Larry Don Scheetz of Sharon,PA, died peacefully at home on January 27, 2026, after his years long battle with cancer. He was 71 years old.
Larry was born on July 8, 1954, to Ruth (Caniff) and Robert Scheetz in
Weirton, WV.
He graduated from Youngstown State University with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice.
He married Dawnle (Smith) on August 31, 1991, in
Follansbee, WV. They have been married for 34 years. They belonged to many local organizations and had a passion for assisting military veterans and their families.
Larry served in the U.S. Army for 39 years before his retirement as a Lieutenant Colonel. In 1971, he enlisted as a soldier serving as a Pershing Missile Crewman in Germany. He transferred to the U.S. Army Reserve in 1973 in the Quartermaster Corps. Larry graduated from Officer Basic Course in 1989, and then went on to complete Officer Advanced Course as a Petroleum Officer. He served in different military units but mainly with the 475th Quartermaster Group where he also held the position of Supervisory Staff Administrator as a civilian employee. Larry had the opportunity to travel the world through many different military assignments. He was deployed to the conflict in Operation Desert Storm as well as the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Throughout his decades-long career in the military, he received many awards and honors, including The Honorable Order of Saint Martin.
After retirement from the military, Larry worked as Mercer County Director of Veterans Affairs for 7 years where he worked tirelessly to provide support and assistance for veterans and their families. He was on the board for Community Action Partnership Mercer County and was a member of James Stoner VFW Post 6233 (service officer and trustee), Sharon American Legion Post 299, Sharon Elks Lodge 103 (Past Exulted Ruler) and many other community organizations.
He enjoyed attending car shows, maintaining his lawn, gardening and landscaping at home, and rooting for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Surviving is his beloved wife Dawnle, his children: Jennifer (Joseph) Jones, Amanda (Jonathan) Schey, Melanie Scheetz, Sarah Scheetz, Adrienne Scheetz, and his brother Charles Scheetz. He has 7 grandchildren (Alexavier, Scarlet, Samantha, Zachary, Zoeie, Alexander, and Isabella), 21 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Ruth Scheetz, as well as his brothers Darrell, George, and Edward Joseph, and his sisters Marjorie and Roberta.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Trails End Conservancy (
Hermitage, PA) and/or Youngstown Blue Coats (
Hubbard, OH).
There will be a Celebration of Life at the James Stoner VFW Post 6233 in
West Middlesex, PA on February 21, 2026, from 1:00 – 5:00 pm. Military Honors will be at 2:30 pm.
