Colonel (Retired) Larry Robert Sims passed away peacefully on November 1, 2025, after a 19-month courageous battle with cancer. He maintained his dynamic personality and sense of humor until the very end. Larry will be missed by his family and a multitude of friends.
Larry was born on February 5, 1951, in Clarksville, Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Edward Sims and Ida Geraldine Odom Sims; his sister, Elizabeth "Liz" Anne Warren; and his ex-wife and mother to his children, Toni D. Hunt.
He is survived by his wife of almost 29 years, Sharon "Sherri" Sims; his children, Larry "Sonny" Robert Sims, II and Susan Diane Sims; his sister, Mitzie (Randy) Allen; his stepsister, Terri Haywood; his grandchildren, Jody Williams, Trent (Brooke) Sims, Larry "Beau" Robert Sims, III, and Harlie Sims; several great-grandchildren who call him "Pappy"; and several nieces and nephews who affectionately call him "Uncle Bubba." He is also survived by his 89-year-old mother-in-law, Shirley R. Murberger, whom he has helped in her care for the past six years.
Colonel Sims served in the Army from 28 May 1971 until 28 February 2011 and continued to worked in a contractor status until 2020. He served the majority of his career in the Arkansas Army National Guard in a variety of assignments, including Commander of the 2-223 Regional Training Institute, TAC Officer at Arkansas Military Academy, and Telecommunications/Infrastructure Manager for the Arkansas National Guard. His military awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, and many more. After retirement, he worked part-time at Payne's Valley Golf Course in Hollister, Missouri.
Larry spent his younger years working construction and the coal mines with his dad. Many claimed that he was the best back-hoe operator in Arkansas and Oklahoma. He loved cars and trucks (old and new), golf, working with his hands, and was often referred to as a Jack of All Trades because he knew a little bit about everything, and many people loved him.
Larry demanded a lot from others, as well as from himself. He had a kind heart and great sense of humor, and many people loved him.
Most importantly, Larry was a Christian; he loved Jesus; and he prayed often.
There will be a private family gathering at a later date. Arrangements and cremation are under the direction of Cremations of the Ozarks.
