Retired Master Sergent, Larry Eldon Spybuck, Be-Me-Ne-Ba-We, a proud elder of the Absentee Shawnee Tribe, Veteran of the United States Airforce and loving husband, father and family man has passed away peacefully on December 5, 2024 at 85 years of age.
His parents, James Elmer Spybuck and Ramona Mack-Spybuck-Yones was given this gift of life on April 29, 1939 in Shawnee, Oklahoma. Larry led an extraordinary path and remained a guiding light to all. The start of his adventurous journey in life took him to Haskell Institute in 1957. During this time, he flourished, due to his unbelievable talent in various sports. Specifically, his wisdom, strength, guidance and knowledge for softball fastpitch allowed him to meet, teach and travel far. The talent of Larry Spybuck was known by many.
On, October 7, 2013, Larry was inducted into the Haskell hall of fame. A well-deserved honor. Upon completing his studies at Haskell, his talent would take him to the next part of his journey, and he enlisted into the United States Airforce in 1960. Larry carried his love and respect of the USA proudly and made it known he served for "26 years and 25 days". He was stationed all over the world including Greece, Greenland, Iceland, Germany, Alaska and several other countries/states. Throughout his extensive traveling he always maintained an impact on others due to his fastpitch knowledge as he played and coached.
Larry's immense humor, intelligence and genuine personality was felt by all. Throughout his military and academic career, Larry remained true to his tribal traditions. His commitment in military investigations, policing, customs and criminal justice degree paved a way to becoming the Chief of Police for the Absentee Shawnee Tribe. A well-deserved and earned role. However, Larry's most fulfilling and grand accomplishments was his commitment to his family. His love, strict settings and will to guide and provide led his family every single day of his life and beyond. He was gifted with a passion to talk and could easily go on and on about his family, his sports and travels. Larry's legacy is not easily summed up but the softball analogy written by his loyal and close friend George Tiger has captured our hearts "
In his youth he started his run to first base and while attending Haskell was on his way to second base during his miliary service career he was running to third base, and after his retirement he is rounding third base and was on his way home. As he approached home plate, he waved his ball cap to bid us "until next time". Haskell's softball's big guy has touched home plate and may the great umpire call him "SAFE AT HOME".
