Larry Vail Obituary

Larry Vail, 91, of McCordsville, passed away on March 7, 2026. He was born May 11, 1934, in McCordsville, to Robert and Edna (Bergner) Vail.

Larry was a lifelong farmer, well-known for his fields of pumpkins and mums, and for the pride he took in working the land. An avid outdoorsman, he found joy in nature and in restoring his first tractor-a treasured purchase from Reynolds Farm Equipment. Larry also had a special fondness for Ford Mustangs throughout the years. In addition to farming, he was a dedicated beekeeper.

He was a longtime member of McCordsville United Methodist Church and served the community as part of the first group of volunteer firemen in the McCordsville Fire Department.

Larry had a gift for storytelling that his family will forever cherish. He could sit at the kitchen table or lean against a fence post and spin a memory into something you felt like you were living right alongside him. Whether he was recalling a long day in the fields, sharing a lesson learned the hard way, or laughing through a tale about neighbors, tractors, or childhood mischief, Larry's stories were where his heart shined the brightest. Those moments-unhurried, honest, and filled with his trademark humor-became treasured traditions for those who loved him.

He loved turning leftover wood, scrap metal, and found odds-and-ends into handmade knickknacks. Each piece-simple, practical, or just plain whimsical-carried a bit of his personality.

Larry is survived by his son, Brett Vail (Stephanie); his grandchildren, Breanna Herbst (Blake) and Travis Vail (fiancee, Brooke Osborne); and his great-grandchildren, Caia Vail, Chesney Herbst, and Paisley Herbst.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his grandson, Tyler Vail; and his brother and sister-in-law, Howard and Marylen Vail.

Larry will be remembered for his hardworking spirit, love of the outdoors, and devotion to his family and community.

Funeral services were on Thursday, March 12, 2026, at McCordsville United Methodist Church. Burial was in Gravel Lawn Cemetery.
