Larry Waters, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, departed this life on Thursday, January 22, 2026, at the age of 75. Born on November 29, 1950, in
Jacksonville, Florida, Larry's life was a testament to love, family, and unwavering kindness. He spent his entire life in the city where he was born, creating a legacy that will endure in the hearts of many.
Larry was the cherished son of Melvin Smith and Thelma Taylor, who both preceded him in death, alongside his former wife, Annette Waters, his bonus father, Fred Taylor, his sister, Jacqueline Seymour, his brother, Larenza Taylor, and his nephew, Eric Waters. Despite these profound losses, Larry's spirit and warmth continued to shine brightly through his family and friends.
Larry's educational journey took him through the Public Schools of Duval County, culminating in graduation from Stanton Vocational. His career as a Sanitation Specialist with the City of Jacksonville reflected his commitment to serving his community with dignity and respect. Those who worked alongside him remember him as a mild-mannered and easy-going person, well-liked and well-dressed, who always approached his work with integrity.
Family was the cornerstone of Larry's life. He leaves behind a loving legacy, including his three children, Chris Bernard Chaplin (Kathy), Larry Edward Waters, and Sherry Lashon Waters. Larry was a proud grandfather to nine grandchildren, a delighted great-grandfather to two great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandfather to one great-great-grandchild. He is also survived by his siblings, Sandra Williams, Cleta Waters, Sheila Taylor, Beverly Waters, Thelma D. Sawyer-Grant, Fred C. Waters (Norma), and Ralph J. Waters (Beatrice), along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and many sorrowing friends who will miss him dearly.
Larry was known for his artistic and intellectual pursuits, always immersing himself in books and enjoying talk radio. His love for morning and evening walks brought him peace and clarity, allowing him to appreciate the simple beauties of life. A devoted follower of Evangelist Billy Graham and Dr. Charles Stanley, Larry found solace and inspiration in their teachings, which helped shape his values and outlook on life.
Though Larry's passing leaves a void in the lives of those who loved him, we take comfort in the memories he created and the love he shared. His kindness, gentle spirit, and unwavering support will forever be etched in our hearts. Rest in peace, dear Larry. Your light will always shine in the hearts of those who knew and loved you.
