Laurence Dale Coder Jr., affectionately known as Larry to his friends and loved ones, passed away peacefully on March 13, 2026, in
Midland, Michigan, surrounded by his family. Born on June 5, 1939, in
Toledo, Ohio, Larry's journey through life was marked by his unwavering kindness, gentle spirit, and handy nature-qualities that endeared him to everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.
His educational pursuits took him to Lincoln Welding School in Cleveland, Ohio, and later to Coyne Electrical School in Chicago, Illinois. These institutions not only equipped him with valuable skills but also instilled in him the work ethic that would define his career. Larry proudly served in the Army Reserves in Heavy Artillery from 1960 to 1966, a testament to his love for his country and his commitment to its defense.
Professionally, Larry dedicated 41 years as an electrician for General Motors in Bay City, Michigan, a role he performed with excellence and pride. He is remembered as someone who was always ready to lend a helping hand or share his wealth of knowledge. There wasn't anything Larry couldn't fix or figure out.
Beyond his professional and military service, Larry's life was rich with personal passions. An avid fisherman, he found great joy as a charter captain aboard his beloved boat, Sea Gypsy Charters, navigating the waters of Saginaw Bay. His love for the open water created countless stories and cherished memories shared with family and friends.
Family was the cornerstone of Larry's life. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 61 years, Judith Lynn Coder; his son-in-law, Gary Shannon; and his cherished grandson, Kyle Moffett. Larry's legacy lives on through his loving daughter, Rebecca Shannon; his beloved son, Paul Coder (Barb Coder); his cherished granddaughter, Kennedy Shannon (fiancé Austin Williams); and his grandson, Spencer Coder.
Larry's presence as a grandfather was nothing short of wonderful. He shared wisdom, laughter, and moments that his grandchildren will treasure forever. His kind, gentle, and handy nature showed not only in the way he fixed things around the house but also in how he never said no to someone who needed help.
If we had to describe our father and grandfather in just a few words, we would say he was truly the "salt of the earth." Larry's life was a success, measured not in accolades or achievements, but in the love he gave and the lives he touched.
Laurence Dale Coder Jr. leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and enduring kindness. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. Larry's life was a beacon of gentleness in a world that often forgets the power of a soft touch and a kind word. As we say goodbye to this remarkable man, we take comfort in knowing that his light will continue to shine in the hearts of those he loved. At the request of Larry, there will be no service. All of us at Ware Smith Woolever are honored the Coder family has entrusted us with the care of their loved one.
