Laurence Futch Obituary

Laurence Ernest Futch, 88 of Fernandina Beach, FL passed away on September 14th, 2025.
Born on March 7, 1937 in Jacksonville, FL to the late Maurice Daniel Futch and Disconia Green Futch. A sixth generation NE Floridian, he grew up in Jacksonville, FL and graduated from Paxon High School in 1955. Shortly after graduating, he met his future wife, Murlene Yvonne Stewart, at Hope Baptist Church in Jacksonville. They married on August 18, 1957 and remained married for 68 years.
He began working as a teenager at A&P Grocery as a bagboy and later at the St. Regis paper mill in North Jacksonville. In 1963, he made the life-changing decision to become a firefighter for the City of Jacksonville, where he remained for over 30 years, retiring as a Lieutenant. He was extremely proud of his time as a firefighter until the day of his death.
Ernest loved working with his hands and particularly loved woodworking. He was known for making wood Christmas decorations every year for his friends and family. He and his wife, Yvonne, also loved to travel. They, along with their best friends Hubert and Gail Lee, visited all 50 state capitals and traveled overseas.
He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Fernandina Beach for 50 years where he served as Deacon, Usher, and on the Buildings and Grounds Committee.
He is predeceased by his parents, siblings (Dan, Lucille, Bill, Lily, and Richard), sons, Larry and Alex and son in law, Stuart Davis.
He leaves behind his wife, Yvonne Futch of Fernandina Beach; daughter, Phyllis Davis of Fernandina Beach; and grandchildren, Sarah (Javier) Sanchez of Apopka, FL, Laurence Futch, Paul Futch, Patrick Futch, and Natalie Futch. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Mary Futch.
Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Friday, September 19th at the First Baptist Church of Fernandina with a viewing at 10 am.
He will be laid to rest following the service at Bosque Bello Cemetery in Fernandina Beach.
Donations in their name may be made to the First Baptist Church of Fernandina Beach or the charity of your choice.
