Laurence (Larry) Maurice Miller, Sr., 77, of Missoula, MT passed away on Tuesday, January 25, 2024 in Portland, OR. He was born July 30, 1946 in Norfolk, VA to Wilton Aubrey Miller and Mary Elizabeth Wright.
Larry grew up as an only child and was raised by his father and his grandparents in Norfolk, VA. He served honorably in the U.S. Army in the Vietnam and Gulf Wars and retired as a Sergeant. After Vietnam, he served as a Virginia State Police Trooper before deciding to go to Rick’s College in Rexburg, ID. There, he met his first wife, Patricia Kay Cox, and they went on to have five children. Larry earned his BA degree in Law Enforcement from Brigham Young University, then went on to work for the Boy Scouts of America for most of his professional career. He eventually ended up in Missoula, MT, where he retired as the Senior District Executive for the western half of that state. Before encountering health problems that would take him to Portland, Oregon, he spent his retirement years in Missoula with his second wife, Betty Jo Maughan. He was a skilled guitar player and singer and retained his love of music into his later years. He was also an accomplished knifemaker, a hobby that afforded him the opportunity to do something he loved just as much, bartering and making new personal connections with others. He also enjoyed watching old western movies and collecting Disney memorabilia and specialty whips. Larry converted to Mormonism in his late 20s and remained in that faith for the rest of his life.
Larry is survived by six of his seven children, Larry Miller, Jr. of Portland, OR, Leah Senatra of Happy Valley, OR, Ryan Miller of Bedford, TX, Shae Miller of Bedford, TX, Travis Miller of Missoula, MT, and Weston Vance of Salt Lake City, UT, and by his three grandchildren, Analicia Miller of Bedford, TX, Sophia Senatra of Happy Valley, OR, and Jordan Barranco-Kim of Lewisville, TX.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents and by his wife, Betty Jo, and by his daughter CJ Vance.
