Laurence Pettit Obituary

Laurence Craven Pettit Jr. (Larry) departed this world on Sunday, the 8th of September 2024, after a brief illness. He was born December 6th, 1936, in Front Royal, VA to Laurence and Virginia Corder Pettit. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Anna Katherine "Kitty" Robinson Pettit; his children, Lauren Corder Pettit Harper (Allen) and Laurence C. Pettit III (Susan); four grandchildren, Taylor Harper (Andrea), Witt Harper (Rebecca), Madeline Pettit-Jackson (Merric) and Alicia Katherine Pettit. He is also survived by four great-grandchildren; a special sister-in-law, Cindy Parker; and four nephews.

Larry was a member of the 1955 of Warren County High School graduating class. He received a B.S. and M.S. from Virginia Tech. He began his professional career in Louisiana where he served on the faculty of the University of Southwestern Louisiana. In 1966, the University of Virginia's Colgate Darden Graduate Business School recruited him, where he earned his Doctorate. The last 40 years of his career were spent on the faculty of the University of Virginia's McIntire School of Commerce. Larry taught corporate finance and established the GDP case method of teaching which helped the McIntire School achieve national prominence. He also launched the accredited International Finance and Banking class. Larry loved teaching and took much pride in his students' accomplishments. He retired as Professor Emeritus of the McIntire School where he had an enormous positive impact on generations of students. He was also a member of the Raven Society.

In addition to his teaching career, Larry started the AICPA National Banking School, led the commercial lending continuing education program for the Virginia Bankers Association, and was a commercial lending training consultant for the Bank of America and Crestar Banks. He also served as a consultant to small businesses and community banks.

Larry was a lifelong Presbyterian and an ordained elder at Meadows Presbyterian Church. He supported his community and many local charities. He loved UVA athletics and spent a lot his Saturdays in Scott Stadium. He was an avid reader. After his retirement from U. Va, Larry and Kitty spent many days hosting family and friends on their back deck, overlooking their lovely yard. Larry continued what he had started forty years earlier in Commerce school; counseling and comforting others.

Larry's family would like to express their sincere thanks to the kind and compassionate caretakers and doctors who assisted him and guided us over the past few months.

A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, the 19th of October at 11:00 a.m. at Meadows Presbyterian Church, 2200 Angus Rd., Charlottesville, VA 22901. The family requests donations in Larry's honor be made to Book Baskets, a local charity that provides books to children. Their address is: 105 Whetstone Place, Charlottesville, VA 22901.

A very good man who I highly respected and greatly enjoyed being around. He had a lively mind and always had interesting things to say, often with a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye. And he clearly had a big impact on his students and colleagues. I'll miss him but will always cherish his memory. My deep condolences to his loving family -- Mrs. Pettit, Lauren, Larry, the grandchildren and all others. You did good, Mr. Pettit.

My deepest condolences on Professor Pettit´s passing. Larry was my professor in 2000, teaching me his famous GDP course before I later went on to a job on Wall Street right out of McIntire. Larry´s course was incredibly demanding and rewarding, but what I remember most is the time Larry gave to his students in his office hours. Larry would play classical music and debate a company´s valuation and future potential with us, proving invaluable learning but also putting the fun into business. He was a truly exceptional professor and so selfless in giving time to his students. I am sending the family my warmest thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Thank you for the memories.

So sorry to hear of Larry´s passing. I´m a distant cousin of his, my name is Beth Knight Williams. I´m Ruth Knight´s granddaughter. Larry and Kitty have been so kind to my family and I over the years and have given my parents a place to stay when I had several surgeries at UVA. They also visited with us before I had jaw surgery at UVA in 2001. Last time I saw them was probably several years later when my brother was going to UVA as a finance major. I so appreciate all Larry and Kitty have done for my family and I and I´m sorry I will be unable to attend the service on 10/19.

FROM : Mike Moose - U.Va. Commerce 1971 (Marketing)

As an undergraduate student, Professor Pettit taught me Business Statistics
(2 Semesters), during my 3rd Year, 1969 to 1970. I remember him very well also, as a Finance Professor. Although I was a Marketing Major, I saw him often, during my 2 years in the Commerce School.
After I Graduated, in 1971, I would always speak with him, whenever I visited the University of Virginia, for various U.Va. Reunions and Commerce Events.
I saw Prof. Pettit at the Oct. 1, 2011 football game, in the President's Box for VIPs. It was GREAT to speak with him, at THAT time. I may have seen him on
a few more occasions, after that weekend.
He was an OUTSTANDING Commerce Faculty Member. Although I will be unable to attend His Memorial Service, I will Always remember HIM, as a great inspiration to me and Many other Commerce School students !!

SINCERELY,
C. Michael Moose

Kitty, Nancy and I are so sorry for your loss. Larry was a role model for everyone he encountered. He had great ideas for getting things done. I enjoyed our time together on various church communities and many years in a Meadows church men's breakfast group. May God's peace and love be with you and your family. Dick & Nancy
