Lavonn Bernece Guthals

1936 - 2022

Lavonn Bernece Mathis Shelton Guthals was born July 7, 1936, in Blanchard, Oklanhoma. Her parents were Horace Andrew Mathis and Mattie McConnell; grandparents were John Randolph McConnell and Mary McGaha.
Lavonn married Charles Guthals, September 9, 1991. Lavonn enjoyed every minute of the time spent with Charles.
Lavonn graduated Eastern New Mexico University, Portales, in 1990 with a Bachelor of Science degree.
She was an employee of the state of New Mexico Department of Social Services for twenty eight years, progressing to the senior supervisor position. Lavonn enjoyed her time with the department and spoke highly of the people she worked with. After retirement she worked as a medical social worker at Farwell Convalescent Center. She retired from that position due to health concerns.
Lavonn was active in her church. She enjoyed being a lecturer and a Eucharistic minister and other offices in the church.
She was active in the Republican Women's group of Curry County acting as secretary and other offices.
She is preceded in death by grandparents; parents; sister, Peggy Hammach; her son, Greg Shelton; and her husband, Charles Guthals.
She is survived by grandson, Dr. Jarod Shelton and wife Paulina Shelton; granddaughter, Shardai Shelton and husband Christopher Wiese; daughter-in-law, Virginia Lynne Shelton; great grandchildren, Aidan and Ashton Wiese; nephew, Andy Hammach and his wife, Holly. Additionally, she is survived by four stepchildren, Charlton, Bryan, Cindy, and Carrie; as well as several step grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Friday, August 26, 2022 from 11:00AM - 6:00PM at Muffley Funeral Home, 1430 Thornton Street, Clovis.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, August 27, 2022, at 10:00AM at St. James Episcopal Church, 1117 N. Main St. Clovis, New Mexico, with Father Alan Brockmeier officiating.
