Lawrence (Larry) Frank Adamo was a steadfast and loyal son; a brother, uncle, neighbor, coworker, artist, and generous friend.
Larry was born on October 23, 1940 and died on Sunday, February 19, 2023 at the age of 82. In between, his life was filled with conversation, creating artwork full of texture and color, and enjoying life in a small town. He was a man who knew the baker and butcher by name. He was genuinely interested in hearing about other people's lives and chatted with everyone he met. He loved books and the worlds to which they could transport you. He had a braintrust of knowledge regarding Italian cars. He loved the jazz music of Bix Beiderbecke and of classical composers. Larry did not own a cell phone. He eschewed technology and used email grudgingly. He was a gentleman for whom a good cup of coffee and a slice of panettone was a ritual to be slowly and intentionally enjoyed. He had an elegant soul.
Larry was born in the Bronx, NY. He graduated from Hempstead High School in 1958. He attended Cooper Union and was a delivery person. Heloved to tell stories of the famous people to whom he delivered a sandwich. Later he moved to New Paltz and worked in a bookstore where he shared his love of books with many. He was a Senior Sales Representative for Abrams Books in New York City where both his love of books, travel, and conversation were invaluable.
At heart, Larry was an artist. He never stopped sketching and painting or meeting new people. His travels led him to meet and form a deep friendship with a Hungarian Countess, Catherine Karolyi, and the Michael Karolyi Artist Foundation in Vence, France. A seven acre artist colony sheltered under olive groves and fruit trees, where Larry found a sanctuary that fed his love of conversation, his passion for painting, and the beauty in his soul.
Larry was preceded in death by his father and mother, Frank and Bella (Rausch) Adamo. He is survived by his brother, Robert (RuthAnn) Adamo, his two nieces, Susan (Paul) Baliles, and Aileen Connors. He had five grandnephews and one grandniece.

Dear Larry, I am sorry I didn´t get a chance to thank you for all of our long conversations about the south of France, photography, art, NYC in the 60s, music, cars and people. I never tired of hearing your wonderful stories, you were such good company. You were such a gentle man, so kind and generous. Thank you for being yourself, I will miss you.

I was lucky enough to work with Larry at Abrams. He was knowledgeable, hardworking, cared about the books and his customers. Years ago when I was visiting bookstores in Iceland, more than one buyer asked about Larry. Not sure he ever went to Iceland to sell books, but he sure was able to sell Abrams books there some way some how.
It was a honor to work with Larry.

I worked with Larry at Abrams. One of the highlights of each day was when Larry would come into my office to kibbutz about this book or that person or anything that came to mind. He was a gentlemen and a gentle man, and will be missed.

I cannot tell you how sorry I am to learn of Larry's death. While we never worked together, he was legend among booksellers and publishers for his probity and conscientiousness. He was also a gifted artist. We last met over lunch in Hastings on Hudson NY; he was exploring moving closer to NYC but wasn't able to find anything to his liking. RIP

Larry moved with my family to New Paltz to help my parents open Ariel Booksellers when I was 6. He lived with us for a while and was a cherished member of our family during that time and beyond. He was always so lovely with me and my sister. He was a gentleman, a scholar, and a dear dear man. He will be missed.
