Lawrence Bernard Lage, in his 95th year, of Taos, passed away Saturday, August 26, 2023, surrounded by family.
He was born October 1, 1928, in Jefferson City, the son of Andrew Bernard and Theresa Bernadine (Veltrop) Lage.
He was united in marriage on February 20, 1954, in St. Thomas to Norine Adelaide Lackman who preceded him in death on December 12, 2007.
Lawrence worked as the head groundskeeper for the Missouri State Capitol before he and his wife opened and operated Lage Gardens for the rest of their lives. He also worked at Paul Lage’s Cabinet Shop. They were vendors for many years with the Columbia and Cole County Farmers Markets.
He was a life-time member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Taos and the Knights of Columbus, and was also involved in pro-life activities. He was a frequent usher and lector in church. He enjoyed genealogy, history, and tending to his many plants and trees.
Survivors include twelve children and their spouses, Alice (Bill) Gathright, Taos; Andy (Sharon) Lage, Mary’s Home; Carolyn (Steve) Baker, Russellville; James (Lisa) Lage, Mary’s Home; Betty (Doug) Distler, Jefferson City; Diane (Neil) Groves, Westphalia; Marie (Ronnie) Massman, Eldon; Debbie (Gary) Hartman, California, MO; Brenda (Craig) Luebbert, Kansas City; Kathy (Roger) Kliethermes, Ashland; Gerry (Carol) Lage, California, MO; and Lori (Jeremy) Tappel, Wardsville; 38 grandchildren; 58 great-grandchildren; two siblings, Bernard (Linda) Lage, and Wilbur Lage, Taos; and several in-laws and other extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Norine Lage; one daughter, Janice Lage; one son, Joseph Lage; two granddaughters, Audrey Lage and Jessica Hartman; three sisters, Loraine Lage, Mary Haller, Regina Falter; and four brothers, Jimmie Lage, Paul Lage, Walter Lage, and Joseph Lage.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, August 29, 2023, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Taos with a prayer service at 3 p.m. Additional visitation will be 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Wednesday at the church.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 12 p.m. Wednesday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church with the Rev. Kelechi Uzuegbu and the Rev. James Finder concelebrating.
Burial will follow at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Cemetery, followed by a luncheon at the Taos Knights of Columbus Hall.
Memorials are suggested to the Vitae Foundation or to the St. Francis Xavier Parish.
