Lawrence Ray "Larry" Coiner, 89, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on April 4, 2025, in Olathe, KS. Born on September 17, 1935, in Golden City, MO, he was a son of Loren Lester and Violet Mae Myrtle (Lyman) Coiner. Larry and Kay Frances Baynes were married on September 1, 1961, in Golden City, MO. Larry lived a life marked by service, adventure, and deep devotion to his family and faith.

Larry proudly served his country for nearly four decades. He joined the Army in 1957 and began his military career in an armored tank battalion with the National Guard. In 1969, the family relocated to Neosho, MO, where Larry joined the 203rd Engineer Battalion. He retired in 1995 as Shop Chief of OMS 13 at Camp Crowder with the rank of Master Sergeant after an impressive 38 years of dedicated military service.

Beyond his military career, Larry was deeply involved in his local church community. His faith guided much of his life’s work. He participated in mission trips to Alaska, Arizona, and Mexico and served as secretary for Eagle Wings Ministries. As a skilled builder and craftsman, he contributed significantly to construction projects as the Neosho Church of the Nazarene expanded over the years. As a member of the Joplin District Nehemiah Builders, he helped repair and build several churches on the district. He assisted building three new houses after Joplin was hit by a deadly EF5 tornado in May 2011. He enjoyed this volunteer work for as long as he was physically able.

Larry had a passion for travel that brought him joy throughout his life. Among his favorite destinations were Yellowstone National Park and the majestic mountains of Colorado. However, it was Alaska that truly captured his heart—he and Kay visited at least six times, often sharing those adventures with friends.

A man of many talents and interests, Larry was also an avid HAM radio operator who served as assistant coordinator for Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) in Newton County under the call sign KD0KHT. His wit and intelligence made him a natural communicator and problem-solver—qualities that endeared him to those around him.

Larry is survived by his wife Kay, who was the love of his life; his son Brian of Neosho, MO; his son Eric (Sarah) of Olathe, KS; and three beloved grandchildren: Aidan (Kara) Coiner of McPherson, KS; Liam Coiner of Wichita, KS; and Emma Coiner of Olathe, KS. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins, as well as many friends.

Larry was predeceased by his parents, brothers Lester E. Coiner and Glenn E. Coiner, and half-brothers Albertice, Ernest, and William Coiner.

A burial service will be held at Fort Scott National Cemetery on May 2, 2025, at 1:30 PM. The cemetery is located at 900 E National Avenue in Fort Scott, KS. A memorial service will follow on May 4, 2025, at Neosho Church of the Nazarene at 1045 Fairhill Drive in Neosho, MO, at 2:00 PM.

Larry’s legacy lives on through the lives he touched—with every mission trip completed, every radio signal sent in aid during crisis moments, every journey taken with loved ones by his side. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him. He now rests free from pain and at peace with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Olathe Hospice House at 15310 S Marion St, Olathe, KS 66061; Neosho Church of the Nazarene; or a charity of your choice.
