Lawrence Lieberman Obituary

Dr. Lawrence J. Lieberman

May 28, 1937 - May 4, 2024

Bradenton, Florida - Dr. Lawrence J. Lieberman passed away on May 4, 2024, with family at his side. He was born in New York City on May 28, 1937, to the late Samuel and Lillian Lieberman. Larry was a graduate of Stuyvesant High School, City College of New York, and the University of Florida School of Medicine. After an Internship in Baltimore Maryland, he was assigned to the US Army Surgeon General's office in Washington, D.C. (2 years) and then completed a Residency and Fellowship at the University of Florida (Shands), in Internal Medicine and Cardiology. He began practice in Bradenton in 1970 with longtime classmate Dr. William Linton, Jr.

Dr. Lieberman was one of the Founding members of LW Blake Medical Center (now HCA Blake Hospital) and served several terms as Chairman of the Board and also served as Medical Director for 25 years. In addition, he was a member of the Ethics, Cardiology, Utilization Review, and Credentials Committees throughout his career. Dr. Lieberman was also Chairman of the Board for 9 years at South Bay Hospital, Sun City Center. He was a Diplomat of the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review, a Certified Medical Review Officer, and a member of the Florida Medical Association and Manatee County Medical Society.

Larry loved his medical career of 51 years and took a personal interest in all his patients and their families. He mentored students interested in medical careers, encouraged hospital staff to reach their goals of advancement, and financially helped many on their way to medical careers.

Larry was a loving father and very proud of his family and all their accomplishments. Family cruises were always a highlight, especially with "adventure reports" at dinner every evening. In younger years, he loved playing tennis and then golf and remained an avid Gator Fan throughout his life. He enjoyed yearly trips to Maine and lobster at Nunans, a must. He maintained his friendships with high school friends, as well as medical school classmates, and held his Bradenton friendships close to his heart. His Friday "lunch with the guys" was a highlight of each week. Larry was also a proud member of the Gold Star Club and the Manatee Social Club. He will be missed by so many.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 37 years, Betsy, and sons, Stephen (Maureen) of Bradenton, Gregory (Lisa) of Orlando; daughter, Meryl of Bradenton, and grandchildren, Max, Sydney, Bennett, Lillian Lieberman and Samuel and Matthew Gillis. Also, brothers-in-law, Pete (Roberta), Tom (Nancy), and David Brittain of East Palestine, OH, along with many cherished nieces and nephews. His sister, Gloria Kauffer preceded him in death.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Bradenton Country Club from 4 -7 PM on June 13, 2024, after burial at Sarasota National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions may be directed to UF Medical School Stethoscope Presentation Fund #019753 or UF Stop Alzheimer's Now Research fund #020873, at the University of Florida Foundation Gifts, PO Box 14425, Gainesville, FL 32604-9949; Manatee County Habitat for Humanity,1901 Manatee Ave W, Bradenton, FL 34205 or Bradenton Blue Foundation,100 10th St. West, Bradenton, FL 34205 Brown & Sons Funeral Homes & Crematory 43rd Street Chapel, 604 43rd Street West, Bradenton, FL 34209, is in charge of arrangements. Working on PCU at Blake as a UC, PCT and Monitor Tech for many years I found Dr. Lieberman to be one of the kindest and most respectful physicians I'd ever known. I came from an Ivy league university hospital in California and was surrounded by some of the worlds best physicians there. Dr. Lieberman was always eager to listen, teach, guide and learn from others and was certainly among the best in my experience. A great human, mentor and colleague even though my position was not of high rank. My late husband, Earl, and I were grateful to have known him.
