Lawrence F. McCabe, age 86, of the North Side, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2025, with the warmth of the sun shining gently on his face.
A devoted son of the late Earl and Sophia Wincko McCabe, Larry lived a life guided by his catholic faith, love of country, service to others, generosity, and an unwavering devotion to his family. He was preceded in death by his five siblings who he cared for so faithfully throughout his life: Earl A. McCabe Jr., Stella Dorning, Joseph McCabe (survived by his wife Patricia), Richard "Richie" McCabe (survived by his wife Judy), and Dolores Jane Cessar.
Larry is survived by a large and loving family of nieces and nephews from three generations, all of whom were blessed by his kindness, support, and enduring presence in their lives.
Larry proudly served his country after being drafted into the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, where he was assigned as a radio operator. He played a vital role in battlefield communications and became fluent in Vietnamese, relaying critical information between units and maintaining contact in remote and often hostile environments. His work required courage, precision, and resilience, and was essential to the safety and success of military operations. Larry's service was marked by humility and duty, and he continued to support fellow veterans throughout his life. His Vietnam War ballcap, worn faithfully, was more than an accessory, it was a visible symbol of his commitment to service and country.
Following his honorable discharge from the Army, Larry began a rewarding career in education that spanned more than three decades. He dedicated most of his teaching career to the Riverview School District in Oakmont, where he served as both a history teacher and a guidance counselor. Larry was committed to his students, sharing his love for history and providing guidance and support to help them navigate their academic and personal journeys.
A fierce competitor, Larry was also a championship basketball coach where he inspired a love of sports. He began his coaching journey as head coach for St. Leo's CYO and later served as an assistant coach at Mt. Alvernia High School, where his teams earned both WPIAL and PIAA state basketball championships. Additionally, Larry devoted time to coaching younger athletes at the former St. Sebastian Grade School. He also led teams on international trips, creating memorable experiences for his players and building bridges through basketball.
Above all, Larry lived a life rooted in faith and service. A devoted Roman Catholic, he served the Church in many capacities throughout his life. He held a special devotion to our Blessed Mother Mary and prayed the Rosary daily. The Eucharist and daily Mass were central to his spiritual life. His strong faith shaped his values and guided his actions.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to the
