Lawrence Edward Young III, born in Baltimore, MD, on June 7, 1954, beloved father, grandfather, brother, son, veteran, and friend, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 15th, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. He was 71 years old.
Born with a strong sense of duty and a steadfast work ethic, he enlisted in the United States Navy immediately after graduating from high school in 1972. He completed Navy Recruit Training in Orlando, FL, followed by Radioman "A" School in Bainbridge, Maryland.
He reported to his first duty station at the Naval Communication Unit in Asmara, Ethiopia, from 1973 to 1975, earning the Navy Unit Commendation for meritorious service. He then served aboard USS Worden (CG-18) out of Yokosuka, Japan, from 1975 to 1976. During his time at sea, he traveled around the world, making port calls in Iran, the Philippines, Hong Kong, South Korea, Singapore, and many other countries. He completed his active-duty service in June 1976 as a Radioman Second Class.
After completing active-duty military service, he moved to
Tampa, FL, to be near his parents. There he met Cheryl and later married in 1977.
In 1983, after the tragic bombing of the Marine Corps barracks in Beirut, he felt called to serve again and joined the Navy Reserve. He continued his military service honorably until 2004, achieving the rank of Radioman First Class. While in the reserves, he served at the Navy Reserve Center in Tampa and was attached to LCU 1681.
Beyond his service in the Navy, he built a second career characterized by dedication and kindness. He worked for the United States Postal Service for 32 years, retiring in 2009 at age 55. To his coworkers, he was dependable and hardworking; to his family, he was a steady and loving father.
He was a dedicated volunteer at Camp Horizon for many years, enjoying working with youth while leading activities such as water skiing, riflery, and ministry. He was a deacon at Central Bible Chapel, where he first attended in 1976, and he was generous in giving to those in need.
Everyone was aware of his enthusiasm for sports, particularly for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, as he had held season tickets for 50 seasons.
He is survived by his wife, Cheryl, and three children: son Lawrence (Danielle), and daughters Julie (Jonathan) and Kerri (Markus). He also leaves behind four grandchildren: Maximus, Charlotte, Rileigh, and Griffin. His siblings include Linda, Nelson, Laura, and Paul. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence Jr., and Iona Ruth, as well as two siblings, Sara and Nancy.
