Layne Eliot Scott VanVleet, 5 years old, of Shelby, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, March 8, 2025. He was born on October 14, 2019, in Ludington, Michigan, the son of Sheyenne VanVleet and Reno Cooper.
Layne attended preschool at Shelby Public Schools and made many friends with his radiant smile and contagious laughter. When Layne was not attending school, he had many favorite activities including roughhousing with his sister Reneleigh, sharing his Paw Patrol toys with his little brother Atlas, archery with his father Reno, racing his RC cars, and playing Hot Wheels with everyone he cherished. Layne loved music and loved to show off his dance moves to everyone in his life. Layne liked watching sunsets with his uncle JR and listening to his favorite song, "Let Me Be" by Escape the Fate. Layne would often end his day by cuddling on the couch with his Grandma Cooper or his Mother Sheyenne and his dog Oakley with his favorite TV show on, Paw Patrol. Layne's laughter filled our homes with joy and will be dearly missed by all who were blessed to have known him.
Layne is survived by: his parents, Sheyenne VanVleet and Reno Cooper; sister, Reneleigh; brother, Atlas; grandparents, Robert and Joann VanVleet; grandparents, Frederick Cooper and Debra (McIntyre) Cooper; aunts and uncles, Doyle Burmeister, Jeremy, Justis VanVleet, Carson Cooper, Katherine (Reterstorf) Cooper, Kalie Elder, Emily Cooper, and Therese (Cooper)Taylor, Jason Taylor; as well as many cousins; and great aunts and uncles.
Layne was preceded in death: by his grandmother, Bonnie Burmeister; great aunts, Cheryl Thompson and Mary Nichols; great uncles, Lane and Duane Cooper; great-grandmother, Lilian Thompson; and great-grandfather, Donald McIntyre.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 12pm Thursday, March 20, 2025, at New Hope Community Church, 244 S. 79th Avenue, Shelby Michigan 49455. Visitation will be held from 10am until the start of services at the Church. A luncheon will follow the funeral services.
