Lee George Barte passed away on February 11, 2025, just a few months shy of his 100th birthday on September 8, 2025. A long-time Boise resident and a dedicated veteran of the Pacific Theater in World War II, Lee led a life filled with love, laughter, service, and perseverance. His journey was one of hard work, intellectual growth, and deep commitment to his family and community. Lee was the proud father of four children: Sandra L Ostrogorsky, Lou K Golden, Kim Barte, and Stephanie A Theis. He also embraced the role of bonus father to Jack Higgins, Phyllis A McCormick, and Brenda S Burton. His legacy lives on through his 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren; each continues to bring joy and positivity to the world.
Lees military service was a defining part of his life. At 21 years old, a Naval Lieutenant Junior Grade, he joined the amphibious forces in the Pacific, and served in Japan and the Philippines during the occupation. His experiences left a lasting influence on many and inspired one of his daughters to incorporate Holocaust research in her teaching, emphasizing the importance of understanding history and the sacrifices made during WWII.
Growing up on a farm, Lee developed a lifelong appreciation for the natural world. Early in his life he and his father helped create the Soil Conservation League in New Mexico, testifying in front of Congress on the necessity of landowners being able to improve their soil, water, and related natural resources, including grazing lands, wetlands and wildlife habitat. As an avid environmentalist, he chose a career in water resource management, which focused on the protection of clean drinking water and the preservation of lakes, rivers, and streams and in this capacity was at one time responsible for overseeing the operation of the highest fresh water fountain in the world. His work was a perfect blend of his love for nature and his dedication to providing for his family.
Lees gardens, planted almost everywhere he lived, remain a lasting tribute to his love of the Earth and continue to enrich the world. Lee was a man of many layers, shaped by the changing times in which he lived. While his journey was filled with challenges, his lifes work and his devotion to family left a lasting impact on those who knew him. And shouldnt that be the goal of a life well lived?
