Markesan Community Funeral Home - MarkesanLee William Engel, age 77, of Markesan, passed away on Monday, March 2, 2026, at Randolph Health Services.
Lee was born on December 15, 1948, in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, son of Lester and Fern (Schatz) Engel. On March 25, 1972, Lee was united in marriage to Wanda Westra in Friesland, WI. He graduated from Markesan High School in the class of 1968. After graduation Lee was drafted into the Army, serving his country with honor. Following his discharge, he returned to Wisconsin where he began working on the family farm and resided his entire life. For an impressive 25 years, Lee drove for Lapers school bus service, serving the Markesan School District. He later took on a role at Fox Lake Correctional Institution, where he worked for 18 years before retiring in 2011.
Lee was a member of the Duwane "Sonny" Walker American Legion Post 395 in Kingston, WI, and the Veteran’s Afield Foundation, demonstrating his continued commitment to his community and fellow veterans. He enjoyed the outdoors in various ways, often found hunting, fishing, or trapping, but equally appreciated quiet moments spent by the pond or in the woods. Lee looked forward to taking a ride with Wanda, which often included a meal along the way, a testament to the simple pleasures he treasured.
Lee is survived by his wife, Wanda Engel; four daughters: Jody (Robert) Mace, Tammy (Tom) Retzer, Krystal (Chris) Dahlke, and Tina (Brian) Frank. five cherished grandchildren; Kay Dahlke, Jordan and Paytan Mace, and Austin and Alyssa Frank, who brought immense joy to his life. Lee is further survived by his two brothers, Larry Engel and Randy (Sheila) Engel and his sister, Carol Walker; special aunts, Irene Walker and Sylvia Wiersma; in-laws, Mike DeJager, Ann (Larry) Cupery, Norine Schaalma, Janine (Craig) Kastein, and Kristine (Joe) Caparula; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends, and furry companions.
He was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law; uncle, Sonny Walker and in-laws, Nancy Engel, Lyle Walker, Emma DeJager, and Al Schaalma.
A visitation will be held from 9:00 to 11:00 on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at Markesan Community Funeral Home 868 North Margaret Street, Markesan. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 a.m. at Markesan Community Funeral Home with Pastor John O’Donovan officiating. Military Honors will be provided by Duwane “Sonny” Walker American Legion Post 395.
