A service will be held on September 20, 2024 at Legacy Funeral Home located 1015 S Check St at 10:00 a.m. Military funeral honors will follow at Fort Richardson National Cemetery at 1:00 p.m.
Leland was born June 2, 1950 in East St Louis, Illinois to John Manda and Virgina Kronk. He received a bachelor's degree in education from Southern Illinois University, and joined the US Army Reserve in 1977. Leland moved to Alaska in 1994 to explore more job opportunities and met the love of his life, Judie Harris. Leland was a hard working man and a jack of all trades. He loved working on biomedical equipment with the U.S. Army Reserve as well as substitute teaching and driving school buses. He retired from the U.S. Army Reserve as Staff Sergeant (E6) and school bus driver in June of 2010. He had many amazing stories of his time with the U.S. Army Reserve.
Leland had a passion for painting, wood carving, hiking, fishing, reading and games. He was known for his kind and compassionate heart. He was a loving father and husband. Although he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2006, he didn't allow the disease to slow him down. He visited with friends and family, shared lots of laughs, and even tried taking late night walks with his walker.
Leland is survived by his son Leland Manda, four step daughters, and three son in-laws, Katherine and Travis Campbell, Janice and Justen Marian, Holly and Christopher Bahneman and Pamela Analoak; ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Leland is preceded in death by his wife Judie, his brothers John and James, and his sisters Virginia Bigelow and Patricia Griffith.
The family wishes to send a special thank you to the staff at Harbor View Manor and LifeWorks for their care and compassion.
