Len Miller
June 25, 1938 - Sept. 1, 2022
Len Miller, 84, a resident of the Hillsboro community, peacefully passed away Sept. 1, 2022 at her home.
Len was born June 25, 1938 in Asheville, N.C. The oldest of two children born to William and Dorothy (Donohoe) Wiley. Her family followed her father's career in Sales and moved across the United States. Len often told the story she attended over 12 schools when she was growing up. They finally settled in Portland in the early 1950's where she attended Lake Oswego High School and graduated 'Class of 1956'. She then enrolled at University of Oregon and graduated with a Bachelor of Education in 1960.
There she met her future husband, Stanley Miller, on a blind date her freshman year in college. They married two years later in Eugene and lived on campus while they finished out their degrees. In 1961 they moved to Hillsboro where they raised their sons, Michael and Doug.
Len's passion was learning and teaching; she taught 3rd and 6th grades and worked in the Hillsboro School District, primarily at Brookwood, WL Henry, and Eastwood Elementary Schools. She retired after 38 years. During this time, she also achieved not one, but two Master's Degrees, one in Education and the other in Education Administration.
Len had many interests: reading, crocheting, crossword puzzles, crafts, and her grandchildren. She loved to travel, Stan and Len visited Italy, Europe, Mexico, and made yearly trips to Hawaii. Len enjoyed exercising, was an excellent cook and she loved line dancing. Through the years Stan and Len liked to spend their time at their beach home in Salishan and later enjoyed their home at Black Butte. Len loved Duck football.
In addition to her many interests, Len was passionate about serving her community. After retiring, she enjoyed volunteering in her grandchildren's classrooms. She was the President of St. Vincent DePaul for six years, and Vice President another six years. Moreover, she served her community at St. Vincent Depaul coordinating food center donations/delivery and managing the rent/utilities side of the non-profit for more than 20 years. She was the person people went to when they needed compassionate assistance without any judgement. She was a devoted volunteer at St. Matthews Parish in Hillsboro for nearly half a century.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Kent Wiley; and step-grandson, Sean Barnes. She is survived by her loving husband, Stanley; two sons and their spouses, Michael and Vicky Miller of Hillsboro, Douglas and Theresa Miller of Beaverton; five grandchildren, Jordan, Randi, Wendy, Casey and Wiley; two step-grandsons, Scott and Dylan; two great-grandchildren, Zachery and Parker and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass will be held 11 a.m., Monday, Sept. 12, 2022, at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 475 S.E. 3rd Ave., Hillsboro, OR 97123. Interment will be in St. Matthew Cemetery. Service provided by Duyck & VanDeHey Funeral Homes. Guest book and more photos at:
