Leo A. Garneau

Leo A. Garneau, a resident of the Belvidere section of Lowell and the beloved husband of the late Ann R. (Grondine) Garneau, passed away on Sunday, December 10, 2017 surrounded by his loving family. Leo planned and excitedly celebrated his 100th birthday on May 30th of this year. Family and friends travelled from all corners of the United States and Canada to celebrate with him. He was born on May 30, 1917, a son of the late Mederic and Eliza (Maheu) Garneau. Leo was educated in the Lowell schools and was a longtime communicant of the Immaculate Conception Parish. He served in the United States Naval Reserve for four years from 1935 until 1939 where he attained the rank of Seaman First Class. A metal fabricator by trade, Leo worked for Artisan Industries in Waltham for 42 years until his retirement in 1983. After his retirement Leo was an avid volunteer for the cancer society driving patients to their appointments. What started out as driving one of the Poor Clare Sisters to a cancer appointment blossomed into a devotion of helping them throughout the rest of his life driving them to all of their appointments. On Sunday mornings, Leo would assist the patients at the Tewksbury Hospital. Leo was devout in his faith. He always believed in helping those less fortunate than himself. Survivors include his sons and daughters in law, Leo A. Jr. and Sandra M. (Armstrong) Garneau of Hudson, NH, Larry C. and Virginia A. (Wilson) Garneau of South Carolina; sisters Jean Gagne, of Dracut, Julie Blanchette of Lowell; seven grandchildren and their spouses, Larry Garneau, Jr. and his wife Laurie, Michelle Hallion, Deborah Larocque, Lisa Walsh and her husband John, Karen Lefebvre, Kevin Garneau and his wife Kimberly, Amy Doiron and her husband Darryl; fourteen loving great grandchildren; two great great grandsons; two God Daughters Denise Jezak of Pelham, NH, Connie Mullen of FL; many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Lucien, Garneau, Amedee Garneau, Flossie Grondine, Margaret Desrosier and Theresa Rousseau.
