Leo J. Marubio

Leo J. Marubio, 90, of Libertyville, Illinois, passed away on January 21, 2024. He was born on May 16, 1933, in Chicago, Illinois, to the late Leo J. Marubio, Sr. and Bruna Luisi Marubio. Leo grew up in Chicago attending St. Mary of the Lake Grammar School and DePaul Academy. Leo proudly served in the United States Army. He received a degree in Civil Engineering from Marquette University. He pursued a career as a Civil Engineer working at Signode Steel, U.S. Gypsum, Johnson Outboards, and Abbott Laboratories.

In 1959, he met the love of his life, Joan at a dance at St. Peter's in Skokie. They were married at Queen of All Saints in 1962. Together they built a family, a business, and countless memories. Leo made Joan laugh every day for over 61 years. Leo and Joan opened their first movie theater in 1975, the Palwaukee Movies. Later they also operated the Mundelein Cinema and Prospect Theater. The theaters played a central role in the family allowing Leo and Joan to instill teamwork, resiliency, and a strong work ethic in their kids while giving them lifelong memories. Leo volunteered at many organizations including Rotary Club and the board of Carmel Catholic. Leo had a strong passion for the Bears, Bulls, DePaul basketball, the Carmel Corsairs girls basketball team and any other team his kids and grandkids played on. He cheered the loudest and proudest. He enjoyed studying the stock market, going to breakfast with his friends in the Romeos (Retired Old Men Eating Out) and mowing the back 40 on his John Deere which allowed him to enjoy the occasional cigar.

Leo will be remembered for his dedication to his family, his wonderful sense of humor, and his contributions as a civil engineer particularly in managing the construction of Abbott Park.

Leo is survived by his loving wife, Joan (nee Colver), and his children Regina, Michael (Kristine Demetriou), Lisa (Amir Fayyazuddin), and Mary Cay (Dante Ingram). He will be deeply missed by his 6 adoring grandchildren, Noah and Nathan Fayyazuddin, Mirabella and Max Marubio, and Vincent and Violetta Marubio-Ingram. Leo is also survived by his dear siblings, Jodonna (the late John) Berquist, Richard (Carol) Marubio, Carla (Dick) Cross, and Bernadette (Jim) Couch. He was a beloved cousin, uncle and great-uncle to many.

A visitation for Leo will be held on Friday, January 26, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at McMurrough Funeral Chapel, 101 Park Pl, Libertyville. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, January 27 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 121 E Maple Ave, Libertyville. Interment to follow at Ascension Cemetery in Libertyville.
