Leo Ramer Obituary

Published by Legacy on Jan. 16, 2026.
Leo was born in Omaha, Nebraska on March 7, 1927 to Leo and Christine Ramer. He is survived by his loving daughters, Susan Boyer and Karen Stefan. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Jennifer (John) Lindsley of Roswell, GA and Michael Stefan of New York, NY, and his great-granddaughters, Kate, Lauren, and Julia Lindsley. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Beverly, as well as his first wife, Mary Jo and his second wife, Darline.

Leo attended the University of Nebraska, where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. After serving two years in the Navy, he completed his degree and began his career in business at General Electric in Oakland, California. Work eventually took him to New York City and later, Rockville, MD where he eventually retired as a Vice President of Finance after 39 years.

As a boy growing up in land-locked Nebraska, Leo loved to read books about explorers, sailors, and adventures at sea - especially ones by Joshua Slocum and Joseph Conrad. After losing his first wife, Mary Jo, to cancer, Leo bought a sailboat and began the next chapter of his life at the helm of his Cabo Rico 34, Tradewind. He learned how to sail single-handedly on Pickwick Lake in Tennessee and then began a 3-year solo circumnavigation. He diligently kept records of his adventures through log books, photographs and letters home, and loved having family visit him in remote parts of the world.

After returning home, Leo met his second wife, Darline, and continued to see the world by sailboat and later through cruising. He was intellectually curious and read widely on philosophy, astronomy and physics. Leo enjoyed deep conversation and lively debate. While he pursued a wide range of endeavors, it was his gentle spirit and deep love of family that will be remembered most.

A celebration of Leo's life will be held at a later date. The family appreciates your thoughts and prayers during this time.

Some many good times with Leo, building his boat, helping us at the Miami boat show, and greeting him as he returned from his circumnavigation in Fort Lauderdale, FL where his sailing adventure began. Edi and I were honoured to be guests at his wedding to Darlene on board Tradewind on the dock behind our Cabo Rico offices, and later to see the two of them off on their first trans Atlantic voyage together. A big adventure for Darlene who's sailing experience was just day sails with Leo in Fort Lauderdale waters. Edi and I stayed in touch with Leo over the years and will miss him very much. Our condolences to Susan and Karen and the whole Ramer family. Leo was an amazing guy. Edi and Fraser Smith

Leo was a true renaissance man! I always enjoyed cruising with him and listening to his stories. I especially appreciated his efforts to make tapas for us during one visit.

Karen, I´m sorry for your loss. Your Father was such a fine example of what mankind should be. I still smile and even laugh when I think of your Dad and Lou sailing across the Atlantic. May God continue to comfort and bless you and your family. Randy Sams

I know it was inevitable for Leo to pass onto his next spiritual life; but who wants such a positive, creative, joyful, successful person to vanish from earth when he has created such a great presence around with his common sense, adventurous spirit of learning and smile bubbling over to others !! Karen & Susan, his daughters, are just as good....so you know he had to be a great Dad, family man......even though he did take off around the world on Tradewind after retirement. I am sure some were a bit worried !! I met Leo when he sailed into Ft. Lauderdale on his Cabo Rico sailboat approximately when Darline was on the horizon. We worked well together on Tradewind putting new chainplates in and refinishing the woodwork. He amazed me for the whole duration of our friendship. He married Darline who had never sailed before and off they went across the Atlantic. I am very happy to have known him for all this time on the planet and his daughters.... Sail on Sailor. We all will meet again in the next harbour.... Respectfully, Catherine Puskarich
