Leo Schofield Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Breslin Funeral Home - Malden on Jan. 20, 2026.
Leo A. Schofield, a long-time resident of Medford and Rockport, died peacefully at the Winchester Nursing Center on Saturday, January 17th. He was 88 years old and had been in failing health for the past year.

Mr. Schofield spent his youth in Medford and Somerville, then earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Boston College in 1959 and, at the same time, was commissioned as a U.S. Army lieutenant through the ROTC program. He served with the Army, primarily at bases in France, until 1963, then began his long-time affiliation with International Truck.

That was also the same year he married Joan (Breslin) Schofield, a 1961 alumna of Boston College. As the years went by, he advanced in the company and he and his family made many moves -- to Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, and Illinois.

However, they returned every summer to their "real" home, a cottage on Long Beach in Rockport which they purchased in 1968. An avid golfer, Mr. Schofield and his family have also been active members of the Bass Rocks Golf Club in Gloucester for many years.

In his spare time, Mr. Schofield enjoyed reading, usually nonfiction; he was also a huge fan of Boston College athletics and its hockey team. "Once an Eagle, always an Eagle."

In addition to his wife, Mr. Schofield leaves his son, Leo A. "Chip" Schofield Jr. of Revere; four grandchildren, Leo A. Schofield III, Brendan K. Schofield, Aidan J. Schofield, and Siobhan M. Schofield, all of Dedham; and daughter-in-law Brenda K. Schofield of Dedham. He also leaves his in-laws, Marguerite E. and John M. Lynch of Winchester, Sister Evelyn Breslin, SSND of Rochester, N.Y. and J. William Breslin of Rockport; and many nieces and nephews, as well as cousins and friends.

He was predeceased by his sister and brother-in-law, Elinor and Kevin Thomas, and his parents, Elizabeth (Canniff) and Anthony L. Schofield.

Relatives & friends are invited to attend his funeral from the Breslin Funeral Home, 610 Pleasant St., Malden on Saturday January 24th at 9 AM followed by his Funeral Mass celebrated at Immaculate Conception Church, 600 Pleasant St., Malden at 10 AM. Services will conclude with interment in Oak Grove Cemetery in Medford. Visiting hours will be held at the funeral home on Friday January 23rd from 4-7 PM.
