Mr. Leon B. Coleman, age 64, of Newnan, passed Monday, February 24.
A service celebrating his life will take place Saturday, March 1, 11:00 AM at the Summerhill Baptist Church- 93 Turkey Creek Spur, Newnan, GA 30263 or 93 Turkey Creek Rd, Newnan, GA 30263. The viewing will take place one hour prior to the service.
On August 11, 1960, a baby boy was born to two loving parents, Johnny and Rowena Coleman. His early Christian education began at Mt. Vernon First Baptist Church, and later, he accepted Christ as his personal Savior and was baptized at Summer Hill Baptist Church.
Leon started his education at Howard Warner and Westside Elementary schools, then spent his junior year at OP Evans before transferring to Newnan High School, where he graduated with the class of 1978. A passionate athlete, he excelled in both football as a running back and baseball as an outfielder, helping his teams secure District championships.
After high school, Leon enrolled at the University of West Georgia as a business major and became a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. However, he felt a calling to explore the world, and so he enlisted in the United States Army. After serving with honor, Leon returned to Georgia, ready to embrace the next chapter of his life. He approached life with the same spirit of dedication and teamwork that defines the game of baseball. His greatest joy was his family, especially his three daughters-his "runners on base"-who were the pride of his life. His home plate was always open, filled with warmth, laughter, and unwavering love.
In 1985, Leon was blessed with his first bundle of joy, landing on first base in the field of life. In 1993, God blessed him with a second bundle of joy, landing on second base. Then, in 1997, a third blessing landed on third base. With each base secured, Leon knew he had been given the gift of family and love, and after seeing each runner safely on base, he could finally round the corners and hit his home run. Reaching the final plate, Leon was able to embrace the full circle of his blessings, hitting his home run with joy and gratitude.
As a family member, Leon was the life of every event. He enjoyed being the family's entertainer/comedian. His true personality came to life after his father was gifted a karaoke machine, a moment that allowed Leon's vibrant character to shine through. From the age of 6, Leon developed an unwavering passion for the Dallas Cowboys, a love that remained steadfast throughout his life. His excitement and support for the team were unmatched, and he took great pride in sharing his enthusiasm with family and friends. His deep connection to the Cowboys was a defining part of who he was, a bond that brought him joy and lasting memories through the years. He was a natural born leader who didn't mind volunteering to head many events. Leon was fortunate to have the opportunity to coach and mentor several groups of individuals throughout his life. One of his proudest experiences was leading the B.C. men's softball team, where he not only shared his love of the game but also helped shape the lives of many players. His giving spirit, demonstrated by freely sharing his time and resources, was a testament to his great generosity, which made a lasting impact on his family, friends andcommunity. His guidance, leadership, and encouragement left a lasting impact on those he worked with, and he will be remembered for his ability to inspire and uplift others.
Throughout his career, Leon was known for his dedication and expertise in project management. For over two decades, he made significant contributions such as implementing several complex client networks including Wells Fargo, Gateway Computers, US Bank, Visa, Target, Honda, Washington Mutual, INC., Daimler Chrysler, earning the respect and admiration of colleagues and clients alike. His hard work and commitment left a lasting impact on Wachovia Bank and MCI WorldCom which later became Verizon.
He took great pleasure in grilling, with a special talent for perfecting Boo Boo's wings. He had a deep passion for drawing, often expressing his creativity through art. He enjoyed traveling both locally and internationally, exploring new places and cultures. He cherished his role as a grandfather and took immense pride in the joy his grandchildren brought to his life. He loved spending time with them, creating memories, and watching them grow. His heart swelled with pride for each of them, and being a grandfather was one of the greatest joys of his life.
His love for family, sports, and traveling the country left an enduring legacy that will be remembered fondly by all who knew him. As we gather to celebrate the life of our beloved father, we remember a man who lived fully and joyfully until the very end. He was truly the life of the party, always bringing laughter and warmth to every room he entered. His thrill for life and ability to make every moment special will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
He is now reunited with his beloved mother, Rowena Patridge Coleman, and is at peace, joining her alongside our Heavenly Father. He leaves behind his precious children, Toyika Shanae Parson & Bryan Parson, Destiny Leondra Coleman-Woods & Xavier Woods, Kayla Elise Coleman. His cherished grandchildren, Bryce Allan Parson, Briana Rae Parson, Amariah Miyoko Coleman, Dallas-Karsyn Lily Woods, Zailyn-Karter Elise Woods, Saint-Kari Leo Woods, Aniyra Cianna Gilmore, and Zayn-Karstin Lennox Woods. In addition to his children and grandchildren remembering him with love is his revered father Rev. Johnny T. Coleman, and his siblings: Aubrey Coleman & Debra Johnson, Debra Coleman, and Lisa Coleman. His loving nieces and nephews, Brandi, Aubrey, and Alexander, will always hold dear his memory.
Lastly, he is survived by his former wife, Tonia E. Jackson, with whom he shared many years of life and cherished memories. He will be deeply missed by many other family members and his lifelong friends.
