Leon Gibson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Rogers Family Mortuary - Alamosa on Mar. 21, 2026.
Leon Desmond Gibson, 80, passed away peacefully on March 20, 2026, in his birthplace of Alamosa, Colorado surrounded by his loving family. Born to Francis Marion and Willie Inez (Langston) Gibson on January 27, 1946, Leon's life journey was a testament to his strong spirit and loving heart.

Leon's formative years in Alamosa forged the beginning of a life filled with love, service, and dedication. After graduating high school, he moved to Utah, where fate smiled upon him, leading him to meet the love of his life, Faye Moore. The couple wed on November 8, 1965, and later solemnized their union in the Salt Lake City Temple in April of 1970. In their treasured togetherness, they welcomed two sons, Lonny (Tina) Gibson and David Gibson, and a daughter, Nancy Gibson, instilling in them the values of family and faith.

A proud father and a doting grandfather, Leon's legacy lives on through his grandchildren: Michael (Misty) Keener, Matthew (Mehgan) Levorsen, Sara (Josh) Phelps, Kendra Lindsey, Ashlee (Justin) Graves, Lorenzo (Jessica) Gibson, and Zach Orme, as well as his great-grandchildren: Hayden and Wyatt Levorsen, Emma Graves, Brooklyn Gibson, Serenity Phelps, Noel Phelps, and a baby girl soon to join the family. Leon was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Faye, his devoted parents, and five of his siblings. He will he greeted by them all and they will celebrate all being together again.

Leon humbly served his country as a member of the army reserves during the Vietnam War, receiving his deployment letter just as he was embracing fatherhood. His unwavering strength was evident as he put duty before self, reporting for service when Nancy was a mere 12 days old.

A deeply spiritual man, Leon was a dedicated member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He held many callings within the Church, finding profound meaning as an addiction counselor-a role that granted him insight and understanding during a critical time in his life. Leon and Faye's service extended to their work in the Albuquerque Temple for seven years, a period they cherished deeply.

His interests were multifaceted; Leon enjoyed the tranquility of fishing and the excitement of hunting. His passion for coin collecting reflected his love for history and legacy, while the time spent with family and friends was his most valued treasure. The thrill of the race exhilarated him, and he relished his experiences being part of a pit crew for many races.

Leon Desmond Gibson leaves behind a rich tapestry of memories that will continue to warm the hearts of those who knew him. Although he is now free from the tribulations of this world, the embodiment of his kindness, dedication, and love remains a comforting presence in the lives of his family and community. His story-rooted in faith, love, and service-will endure as an inspiring chapter in the Gibson family history.

There will be a visitation on Monday, March 23, 2026 at Rogers Family Mortuary in Alamosa from 5-7 p.m. As well as before his funeral on Tuesday, March 24, 2026 from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. with his funeral beginning at 11 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Stake Center at 927 Weber Drive in Alamosa. He will then be transported to Valley View Memorial in West Valley City, Utah to be buried next to his love.
