Leon Houston Jr., 82, of Springfield, passed away on March 21, 2026. Born in Springfield, MA, he was the son of the late Leon and Della Mae (Wilson) Houston. Leon graduated from the former Springfield Technical High School and was a member of Cornerstone Church. He retired from Baystate Health Systems as a cook after 50 years of service. Leon also worked for the Springfield Park and Recreation Department. Mr. Houston helped form the Springfield Softball League and served in various capacities, including coach, manager, official, and umpire for the Park and Recreation Dept., Triple A Slo-Pitch Softball, and the Double LL's Basketball and Softball teams. He also volunteered at the Springfield Boys Club. He is survived by his wife of more than 48 years, Gloria J. Houston; several in-laws; and a host of other relatives. He was pre-deceased by two sisters, Yvonne (Houston) Johnson and Darlene (Pewee) McCummings. Calling hours will be Tuesday 6-8 p.m. at Harrell Funeral Home with funeral services at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Cornerstone Church, 15 Kibbe Rd., East Longmeadow.

My condolences to Leon's family. I am deeply saddened by the passing of Leon. Leon and I grew up together. We went to the same elementary and junior high schools and played at Emley Bill every summer. Leon was always a level headed person, who could be counted on to make good decisions. Leon will be missed by all who knew him.

Some people you just instantly like the first time you meet them. Leon was one of them. I´m grateful I was able to get to know him and work with him at Baystate. My heart goes out to you Gloria. May happy memories bring you comfort in the days that follow.

Uncle Leon...
You were such a sweet, kind, gentle an godly man.. I´ll never forget those times I was struggling after mom you´d come out of nowhere, "come hear girl you´d say " You were so wise Always having the right words I needed to hear.. Oh, Gloria! I am so sorry to hear of Leon's passing. I remember Leon as a gentle soul, and my Mom and i loved his meat pies. I know his is resting in the Lord.

Condolences to Gloria and all the family members. I also worked at Baystate for many years, and had to have many dealings with Leon. We became good friends. He was one of the good guys and will be missed by all the people that knew him. Rest in peace my friend.

Leon and I were home room buddies as freshman at wonderful Tech High!!!
We delighted our home room teacher with our various antics throughout the year!!!
Leon popped in and visited me unexpectedly at Baystate when I was a "guest" there a number of years ago and told me I better eat the food as he made it!!!
I thought it was a great visit and knew the patients were very lucky he was there!!!
He was a very special person!!!
