Leon Schlehuser Obituary
Leon R. Schlehuser, 91, of Columbus passed from this life at 10:04 p.m. Tuesday, October 28, 2025 at Schneck Medical Center.
Born on August 10, 1934 to Robert and Erna Taylor Schlehuser. He was a lifelong member of St. John's Lutheran Church-White Creek and a beloved member of his community, known for his kind heart, steady presence, and willingness to lend a helping hand.
A man of unwavering faith and generosity, Leon could always be found assisting with projects around the community-whether doing construction work, lending tools, or supporting a neighbor in need. As a founding member of the White Creek Conservation Club and Conservation Council, he spent over 60 years helping to build and care for the Conservation Club building at the Bartholomew County Fairgrounds. He took great pride in sharing his own items for display each year during the fair. Leon was a dedicated farmer and loved working the land and appreciating the simple beauty of each season.
An avid outdoorsman, Leon found peace and joy in nature. He loved to hunt, explore, and teach others about the outdoors and local history. His love for the natural world was matched only by his love for people.
Leon proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army, stationed in Anchorage, Alaska. He later dedicated 33 years to the Columbus Fire Department, where he rose to the rank of lieutenant. His service, leadership, and compassion earned him the respect and admiration of many.
Above all, Leon cherished time with his family. Known for his endless stories and ever-present camera, he captured countless memories and moments that his loved ones will treasure forever.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Leon will be remembered most for his caring and loving nature. He had a special way of making everyone feel valued, and at home, and he poured his heart into his family. He is survived by his wife Joan, children, son Terry (Ruth) Schlehuser and daughter Deena (Jon) Stoner, both of Columbus; his grandchildren, Betsy (Michael) Place, Nick Stoner, and Katie Stoner, all of Columbus; and a great-grandson, Luke Place.
