Leon Wells Thompson Jr. "Bud" of Charlotte, North Carolina, passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family, leaving behind a legacy defined by service, dedication, and quiet strength.

Leon was a proud graduate of Troutman High School and went on to serve his country with honor and distinction. He enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served on active duty, including service aboard an icebreaker, and fulfilled critical roles as a corpsman. He later continued his commitment to service in the Army Reserves, again serving as a medic and providing care and support to those around him. Over the course of 31 years of combined military service, Leon rose to the rank of Master Sergeant, a testament to his leadership, professionalism, and unwavering sense of duty.

While active in his military career, Leon pursued higher education at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC). In civilian life, he built a meaningful career in the logistics, safety, and education fields, where he was respected for his knowledge, reliability, and strong work ethic.

Leon was known for being exceptionally handy-a man who could fix, build, or figure out just about anything. He took great pride in passing those skills on to his sons, teaching them by example the value of patience, self-reliance, and doing things the right way. Leon also found joy in gardening, taking pride in nurturing and growing flowers and vegetables with care. He also had a lifelong love for animals, especially dogs and cats, who were constant companions and a source of comfort and happiness throughout his life. Leon cherished the simple pleasures-time at home, moments outdoors, and being surrounded by family.

Leon was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Sara and Leon Thompson; his sister, Louise Martin (Parks); and his nephew, Timothy Martin. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Linda, whose partnership and devotion were the foundation of his life. He also leaves behind his sons, Lee (Cassie) and Lane (Erin); his cherished grandchildren, Natalie, Evan, Owen, Wells, and Katie; and his special niece, Cindy Wiggins (Randy), who held a close and meaningful place in his heart.

Leon will be remembered for his steady presence, unwavering commitment to service, and the deep love he had for his family. His legacy lives on through the lives he touched, the lessons he passed on, and the family he loved so dearly.

A private service will be held at a later date.

If desired, memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care & Control or USO of North Carolina.

Arrangements are in the care of Kenneth W. Poe Funeral & Cremation Service, 1321 Berkeley Avenue, Charlotte, NC 28204, (704) 641-7606. Online condolences may be shared at www.kennethpoeservices.com.

Leon and I worked together for 10 years at NC DMV School Bus & Traffic Safety as Driver Education Program Specialist. We supported each other through those years and became good friends. We retired in 2018 and have maintained our friendship. We both have travel trailers on seasonal sites at Raccoon Holler along the Blue Ridge Parkway. We always looked forward to spending time with Linda and Leon and Trotter - before Trotter was Boone. Leon put God first, family second and country third. We shared much and I respected Leon´s opinions and values. I miss him dearly and pray God will continue to bless, guide and help his family and friends adjust to life without Leon´s physical presence knowing he will watch over them from his higher place. Thank you God for Leon Thompson. We pray for those that don´t have a relationship with Jesus.
Sincerely, Sonnie, Patty and Shiloh Merle McRae
