Today, we come to celebrate the homegoing for Leonard B. Cathey. He was born in Newark, New Jersey on April 28, 1950 to the late Church and Mary Cathey. Leonard was educated in the Newark school system until he graduated from Central High School in 1968.
After high school, he attended Essex County College, earning an Associate degree in Social work. He got a job with the city as a councilor with children for several years. At this time he also became a Muslim at Temple # 3.
Leonard relocated to Cincinnati in 1978, making this his final residence. He had several jobs as counseling and became an Entrepreneur, a little shop on Vine Street, where he sold clothes and Jewelry. Here he met his late wife, Sherrie Cathey; they were married in 1987. Unfortunately it ended in divorce.
His life was not always filled with fun and good days but he approached it with the philosophy that life was precious and honored it with Allah’s purpose. Bernard loved people and places. He was a long time resident at Eden Park Apartments. There he met his best friend, Jackie Knott. One he cherished which he lost due to illness some five years ago.
Leonard passed away suddenly on March 1, 2026, in an accidental death, and was predeceased by Father, Church Cathey, mother, Mary Cathey, sister, Carolyn Cathey, and loved one Jackie Knott. He leaves to cherish his memory, son Al-Kashif Marshell, brother, Philip Cathey, sister, Gail Cathey-McCoy, nieces, Fatimah Cathey, Furaha Cathey, Tuwisha Rogers, nephew, Tariq Rogers, and great nephew Ibnkalif Cathey as well as a host of family and friends.
Family and friends are cordially invited to gather from 2:00 pm until 2:30 pm, on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at the Walker Funeral Home - Walnut Hills Chapel, 2625 Gilbert Avenue, Cincinnati (45206). The memorial service will begin at 2:30 pm.
