Amy Peck Murphy (Pedersen, when I knew Dr. Glick)
November 26, 2024
I have only, just now, learned this sad news; (I left the Pioneer Valley some years ago, eventually settling near my children and grands on the West Coast.) I had the pleasure of getting to know Dr. Glick during the seven years I was employed by Valley Transporter. He never failed to not only be one of my more fascinating passengers, but a truly engaged listener -- such a rarity, it seems! I was fascinated by his ability to see what so many do not: the need to fully face the divisive topic of circumcision. His support of activism in this area, and his true compassion and understanding, were rare attributes, indeed. I send my sincerest condolences to his family; he was a dear soul.

Len Glick was not only my advisor for both my Div 2 and 3 but also a mentor in life. I will remember his stories forever, the introduction of ?Malinowski's term 'imponderabilia' to denote the initial impressions of an unusual or bizarre custom that eventually becomes as familiar and unnoticed as your bedroom wall. I will remember and treasure his gentle guidance and admonishments when I was conducting my own anthropological field research I took some risks that only a VERY naïve 20 something year old would do. I was shocked at his disapproval of the risk but simultaneously he cushioned his admonishment in congratulations for my acquisition of great research material and his true relief upon hearing that nothing happened to me. He was fatherly and so kind as well as absolutely brilliant. I invited him to my wedding on 7/4/1998- in the 'sheep field' and reception at the red barn at Hampshire college afterwards. It was such an honor that he came. He will live on within the hearts and minds of so many of us and has left a lasting passion in many to keep questioning and curious about 'the other' and maintain an awareness of our bias and judgement. He will be missed by the world and my most profound condolences go to Nansi, Benjamin, Noah, Marian, Jesse, Gail and the 5 grandkids.

Prof. Glick was my Division II and Division III advisor at Hampshire College. He was one of the most intellectually rigorous educators I have ever met: challenging, pushing, yet with a huge heart and utter compassion, a combination that helped generations of young people believe in their abilities. Those days under his tutelage expanded my world beyond anything I ever imagined, prepared me for doctoral studies and research, and provided me with the essential tools for understanding the world. My deepest condolences are coupled with lifelong gratitude to have learned under Professor Glick.

When I read Len's book "Marked in Your Flesh", I was quite surprised and deeply honored to find my name in the Preface. When I asked Len what I had done to earn a mention, he said that I had taught him the importance of "persistence". I must assume that was his polite way of saying that I am a "stubborn old man". Whatever his reason(s) for including me, I am still absolutely thrilled that Len thought to mention my name. Len is a true hero to many people! I will miss his wisdom, compassion, and dedication (persistence??) to advocate for Human Rights.
